He exhaled. “Are you sure? There’s no going back after this.”
“I’m sure.”
He held me closer. “I won’t ever fail you again, Sydney,” he vowed.
I believed him. It was then that I practically handed my entire heart over to the Alpha. My new vulnerability was frightening yet…thrilling.
Cole brought me to the brink of orgasm with his skillful fingers but stopped before I erupted. Just as my disappointed sigh echoed, he slammed into me. His name rolled off my lips along with my delighted moan.
His possession was different this time because I was truly his as he was mine. Just as I neared the peak and readied to tumble off, his canines sank into the flesh between my neck and shoulders. I gasped at the sharp pain, but then it dulled to a sweet ache, and pleasure surged through my bloodstream. I swore I felt the earth move.
He growled the word “Mine,” and that is what sent me over the edge.
My orgasm hit so hard I felt like I shattered into a million pieces.
Cole shuddered against me, too, erupting with a moan. “Fuck, Sydney, that was…”
Intense, earth-shattering, mind-blowing.
“Perfect,” he whispered, nuzzling my neck. He carried us down to the mattress without breaking our intimate connection.
Only our heavy breathing filled the room. It was almost perfect, I thought. It was done. The mating process was complete. However, I’d never be acknowledged as Cole’s Luna by his pack without completing the mating ceremony—something like a wedding—in front of the entire pack. I was still an outsider, and Cole would suffer for it.
He inhaled and held me tighter. “Don’t. I don’t want you to worry about anything tonight.”
I closed my eyes. Of course, he instantly felt my dread. Now that we were fully mated, our bond was stronger than ever.
“Everything will be okay, Sydney,” he whispered, pressing his lips to my cheek.
“Okay.” I sighed and untangled myself from him so I could turn to face him. “Cole, there’s still something very important that I have to tell you.”
He sighed heavily. “You won’t rest until you tell me, will you?”
I shook my head sadly.
“Fine,” he said.
“The guys that attacked me last night were from your pack.”
The muscle in his jaw ticked, and his wolf briefly surfaced. His eyes flashed red, but his pupils quickly returned to normal. Another thing I learned about Cole was that he usually had incredible control over his wolf no matter how angry he got.
“That part was unexpected,” he said.
I sat up and pushed my hair out of the way. “What? Are you saying—”
“I wouldn’t be a very good Alpha if I didn’t at least suspect that a percentage of my pack was plotting against me, Sydney. The elders have been a pain in my ass lately. I’ve been reading between the lines and following the signs. Besides, I have my ear to the ground. Nothing much happens at the compound that Stephan doesn’t report back to me.” He frowned. “I never thought they’d go to the extreme of trying to hurt you, though.”
I shoved agitated fingers through my hair. “I don’t care about me,” I cried. “They want you dead, too.”
His gaze flickered over my face tenderly. Since he admitted to having feelings for me, I guess he wouldn’t bother to hide his affection. “Well, I don’t care about me. I care about you. Those guys are lucky Adam killed them first. My way would have been…more gruesome.”
I snorted. “What’s bloodier than ripping someone’s heart out?”
He reached up to outline my bottom lip with his thumb. “Sweet, sweet Sydney. I have my moments.”
My eyes widened at the hint of darkness that flickered in his eyes. I was reminded of the bloody scene at my apartment when we were pounced on by hunters. The ever-composed Cole Grayson really did have his moments of savagery. I didn’t feel threatened at all. I felt safe, and I laid back down to snuggle against him.
“What are we going to do?”
