While she looked incredible, I could tell she was uncomfortable. She pasted a fake smile on her ruby lips and forced her voice to be light and airy, but her eyes showed how miserable she was.

That isn’t her world anymore. She belongs with me in mine.

When it was over, Edward drove her back to her parents’ house. I sent her a thirst trap video. Her eyes lit up, and she ran into the house and straight to her bedroom.

I texted her.

ME: Plug your phone into your charger.

LITTLE PREY: Why?

ME: It has a camera so I can watch you.

LITTLE PREY: Stalker. *Grins*

She did as I instructed. As she watched the video I sent her, she fingered herself and played with her clit. I beat off while watching her.

Before I left on Friday,Delaney brought out two cups of coffee and called me over.

“Figured you could use this. It’s cold out here.”

“Thanks.” I smile, but she can’t see it behind the mask. I’ve always worn the purge mask around her, even though she knows I’m working for Zayne.

He still hasn’t told her who he is, and I’m waiting for her to figure it out and explode.

“You seem anxious today.”

I lift my mask enough that I can take a drink of the coffee. “This is good stuff,” I say after I swallow the hot liquid. “I’m going to New York to see my girlfriend.”

“Oh, how nice. I’m assuming she’s the one who distracted you.”

I nod, chagrined. It still irks me that I let Tim get his hands on her.

“Stop with the guilt, Stryker. Life is too short to carry that on your shoulders.” She leans back in the chair, tucking her blanket around her. “I should know. I’ve lived with it for too long.”

I sit in one of the nearby chairs. “You seem sad.”

She gives me a smile that doesn’t reach her eyes. “Nostalgia. There was a guy I loved with my whole heart when we were in high school. Someone I wasn’t supposed to want and certainly not supposed to have.” Her eyes grow distant as she stares at the maple tree. “I thought we’d end up together.”

“You never know. Fate has a way of bringing people together when the timing is right.”

Her head turns sharply. She sucks in a breath before a ghost of a smile flits across her face. “My mom said something similar. She told me, ‘Life can sometimes get in the way and separate people for a time. But if they’re meant to be together, they always find their way to one another.’ Ironically, you’re saying something similar and don’t know who I’m speaking of.”

Oh, but I do, Delaney. I work for him.

“Thanks for the coffee.” I get up and descend her porch steps. “Duty calls.”

“Thanks for listening. Enjoy your time in New York.”

“I fully intend to.”

CHAPTER 54

Mallory

Ilook down at the designer jeans and cashmere sweater and frown before I sip my coffee. What I wouldn’t give to lounge around in sweatpants. But my mom would have a coronary.

Not like that would be a huge loss.
