“I am actually good at my job, Koslov. It’s why you pay me the big bucks.”

“Don’t I know it. So, what did you find?”

“Turns out this woman lives in Cobble Hill.”

“As in Brooklyn?”

“Unless you know any other Cobble Hills,” she retorts. “She fled New York after her divorce but moved back to the States three years ago.”

I frown.

What would make Katya want to move back to the very city where Igor still resides? Surely, she would have built alife for herself in Russia, so there must be a pretty good reason for her to suddenly leave it all behind…

“Any idea of her motivations?” My mind spins with potential scenarios.

“Not yet. Is this the part that’s going to keep me busy?”

“I think so.”

Rosa chuckles. “Speak soon, Koslov.”

Staring at my phone, I run my fingers through my sweaty hair. I need to try to devise a plan, and I want to do it without my brother’s help.

I want to talk to Katya without Alexei and Dimitri, but it wouldn’t be wise for me to go alone. For all I know, Igor could have orchestrated a trap knowing that one of my family would come looking for answers, and I could be about to walk right into it.

Unlocking my phone, I scroll through my contacts until I land on my cousin’s name.

“How do you feel about a trip to Brooklyn?”

“Brooklyn? You do spoil me, cousin. Last time we went to Brooklyn, we ended up in the shady bar with those strippers who smelled like?—”

“Anton, this is business.”

“So was that.” He laughs. “But sure, count me in.”

“I’ll pick you up outside your apartment in twenty.”

It seems a little redundant to drive all the way to Anton’s place in Soho only to drive back toward Brooklyn, but I don’t want Alexei to spot me getting into Anton’s car and start asking questions. I don’t doubt that he’ll be pleased with my course of action regarding Igor’s ex-wife, but I don’t want him swooping in and taking over.

I want to be the one to see this through, and I want to do it without his help.

On the drive over to Anton’s apartment, I startrehearsing what I might say to Katya in my head, but I can’t deny that the thought of even looking her in the eye makes me feel sick to my stomach.

My knuckles turn white as I grip the steering wheel.

I’m not sure I can trust myself to keep my temper in check when it comes to Katya. After all, she’s the reason my father betrayed my mother.

Perhaps, it would have been better if Alexei was the one to speak with her after all...

“What is this about?” Anton asks as he climbs into the passenger seat of the car.

“We’re going to pay Igor’s ex-wife a visit,” I explain as I turn the car around.

“Okay… I take it that this hasn’t been approved by Alexei?”

“No, so can I trust you to keep your mouth shut for once?”

Anton’s shoulders shake with silent laughter.
