Emotion swells in my throat as I trace an outline around the ugly gash on his temple. “What the hell happened to you?”

“I survived,” he says bleakly, before his expression freezes and he’s slamming his hand down on my mouth again. Seconds later, the restroom door opens up.

“Anna?” Vi’s voice echoes with impatience as she strides further into the room, her cowboy bootsclick clackingtheir frustration on the floor tiles. “We need to get going. Are you done?”

Joseph yanks us away from the locked door as her footsteps approach. He shakes his head at me, demanding nothing but trust from his expression.

I nod.

Message understood.

I trust him with my life.

Relaxing, he removes his hand to let me speak, shooting me a final warning look.

“Nearly,” I croak out. “Sorry for the hold-up…Bad stomach.” I wince at my crap excuse as she comes to a stop just beyond the stall door.

“We can visit a drugstore on the way,” she offers.

“Yeah, sounds good.”

There’s a long pause. It’s a three-way, silent stand-off. I watch in horror as Joseph slowly pulls out a gun from the back waistband of his jeans. What the fuck is he doing?

“Shall I wait?”

“Erm, not unless you want me to put you off eating freaky health food for the next hundred years.”

Vi chuckles. “Okay. I’ll meet you out front.”

Joseph waits until we hear her speaking to the waitress outside before returning his gun to his waistband. “Well done, baby.” He swipes a casual finger across my still-glistening lips that makes my pussy clench. “I’ll explain everything on the way.”

“You mean you’re actually going totalkto me?”

I can’t help it. It just slips out.

His jaw clenches. “You really want to do this now?”

“No, I—”

He mutes me with another savage kiss. “I love you, Anna Williams...I fuckingdiedfor you. That should be enough.”

Survived or died? Which is it, my shadow?

“What—?”

He swallows up another reply and thrusts his hand between my legs. I moan into his mouth as he roughly cups my heat, his own response low and ravening. “We’ll talk, and then we’ll fuck,” he states, eliminating my choice in the matter. “I need to claim this body again,Luna. I need to fill you up with my sin all damn night—to take you at sunset and still be fucking you at sunrise.”

I’m seeing, breathing, hearingonly him. I reach for the thick bulge at the front of his jeans and he growls, grinding his erection against my palm before shoving it away.

“We’re coasting on borrowed time. We need to go.”

I drag myself back to the dingy restroom. “Just tell me why we’re running from her.”

“We’re not running from her. We’re running from the men she works for until we can figure the game plan out and destroy them.”

A vicious shiver rattles through me. He’s so careless with his murder.

He unlocks the stall door and tucks me behind his huge frame. “My car’s parked out back.”
