“You don’t have to ask, because I’m not offering. I’m telling you that’s what’s happening from now on. You’re not staying here alone anymore.”
Bree bites her lip. As tempting as it is to have Cole with her for the rest of her stay, she doesn’t want to burden him.
“What about your work? What about the family you were visiting?”
“I’m done with my clients for now, anyway. And my family will understand, eventually.”
There’s a hint of humor in his eyes, and she scowls.
“I don’t know what’s so amusing about that question,” she snaps.
He grins and leans in to kiss her chastely. “And you don’t have to. Just know that I’m not going anywhere, and no one is going to hurt you."
But Bree still bites her lip, unsure.
“Stop overthinking it,” he breathes. “Just let me take care of you. It’s happening either way.”
His chest rumbles, a deeper purr than before, and she allows him to guide her back into his arms.
“Thank you,” she murmurs, after they’re both bundled back into her nest. “For everything, Cole.”
He presses a kiss to her neck, and she’s asleep within moments.
CHAPTER 27
COLE
Everything is working out fantastically.
He didn’t think the bodies of the brothers would be found that quickly—but the news article frightened her enough to lead her right into his arms.
He was going to stay with her either way—but this time, he doesn’t have to lurk. She’ll know he’s there.
Which makes it that much sweeter.
The only problem left is Eugene.
The Beta is the reason he came to Green Woods in the first place, but once Bree encountered him, he had to change his plans.
No one would miss Eugene, of course. But ridding the world of him will take longer than he thought.
In a twisted way, his girl ruined his plans.
She’s ruined him, if he’s honest.
His entire being is attuned to her. Every decision hemakes is made with Bree in mind. Everything else is secondary.
Including his plans for pathetic, disgusting Eugene.
He knows the Beta isn’t planning on leaving Green Woods anytime soon—a quick cutting of the cables to his car’s ignition is enough to do the trick. So, Eugene is left to wander around town, half drunk and annoying the rest of the residents.
No one will miss him when he dies.
It’s just a matter of when he plans to do it.
It’s one thing to kill in another town, away from his girl—but to do it to here, when she’s the neighbor of the victim?
It would terrify her.
