“Ingrid!”

William stopped short on seeing his wife sitting behind his desk. He had walked the grounds with the property manager who was telling him about some problems with the plumbing.

And he had taken a moment to mull over the situation with Cassie and Evan Davenport. The man had come to services again and had admitted that he was there because of her.

He should talk to her, tell her to think about what she was doing, but he was unable to find the words.

“It feels different.” She murmured, rotating the chair slightly.

“It’s new. Cassie suggested that we get another because the leather of the old one was worn, and it was becoming uncomfortable.”

“Good old Cassandra.” A spiteful smile touched her lips. “She seemed to have men falling all over her. That handsome billionaire for instance who could not take his eyes off her.”

Her eyes snapped to his face. “You should warn her that there will be talk.”

“She knows what she is doing.” He said stiffly. Feeling foolish about standing inside his own doorway, he entered and went to the table to pour a glass of water. “Is there something I can help you with?”

“I have decided to go and visit our daughter.”

Chapter 9

She told him the address and he plugged it into the GPS. He was driving a different car, and she commented on it.

“I like cars,” he said flashing her his charismatic smile that had her senses tingling.

“It’s a Tesla.” Stretching her legs out, she admired the interior and the large computer screen. “Completely electric?”

“Yes. What would you like to hear?” He touched the screen and brought up the section for music.

“R&B.”

She smiled at his surprised look. “I bet you thought I was going to say gospel.”

“Something like that. Any particular artiste?”

“Luther.”

“I happen to like his songs too.” Within minutes, the interior was filled with Luther’s mellow voice talking about a house is not a home.

He had picked her up at precisely four and taken the heavy basket from her to stow in the back seat before opening her door.

They remained silent for a few minutes, before she spoke. “You surprised me.”

He glanced at her briefly before negotiating a sharp turn. “In what way?”

“You came to our service.”

“I did.”

“May I ask why?”

He glanced at her again. “I thought you would be pleased.”

“I am.” She hastened to assure him. “It’s just that you said…”

“I will not be forced into anything. I still maintain that.”
