“Nothing’s wrong,” she said, looking into his eyes.“I just...this was all very unexpected.I’m very happy right now.”
“Me too, sugar,” he admitted, returning her kiss.“I’m glad I was able to make you feel good,” King whispered, brushing his lips against her cheek.“But?”He rolled back and pulled Mia with him so that she rested her head on his chest.
“I feel like I’m looking in at another person. This isn’t me, King.I’m not usually impulsive.”she began.“I don’t know...”Mia wasn’t sure what she was trying to say.She didn’t want to ruin what was happening between them.“And I, um, have concerns.”
“Concerns?”
She shrugged slightly.“Questions.”
There was a pregnant pause before King said, “Don’t overthink it, okay?”
Mia raised her gaze to his.“Let whatever happens, happen.I don’t do this shit, either.I’m not in the habit of jumping into a woman’s bed this fast. But we’re not exactly strangers, and the time for us is right now.”He ran his tongue across her bottom lip.“And there will be plenty of time to answer questions later.”
Mia’s mind went straight to what his ex-wife had said but King didn’t strike her as a dishonorable man, so she kept her thoughts to herself for now.Besides, she didn’t want to bring Sheila into bed with them, and she doubted King would want Jerry there either. The truth was, they’d both had other lives with different people.
They lay together in silence for a long while, and King eventually fell asleep.Mia stayed awake, staring at the ceiling, thinking about the situation she now found herself in.King was right, they weren’t strangers, but they didn’t know each other either. And yet, she felt happy.Somehow, she knew that she had found someone she would enjoy getting to know and spending more time with.
She closed her eyes and let King’s warm body and deep breathing lull her to sleep.
Chapter 12
Mia
The next morning, Mia woke up at King’s house with her head resting against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. He was still asleep, and she smiled as she gazed at his handsome, relaxed face. She didn’t want to leave, but she knew she had to be careful. This thing between them was all so new, and she didn’t want to presume anything.
She got out of bed as quietly as she could and reached for King’s discarded shirt from the night before. She slipped the flannel on, inhaling his scent that was still on it, and made her way to the kitchen.Spying the coffee maker on the counter, she searched around until she found everything she’d need to make a pot. After hitting the on button, she reached for King’s phone where he’d placed it on the counter. She needed to call Sammy.
“Good morning,” Mia said softly, bracing herself for the third degree.
“Well good morning to you, too!”Sammy said in a chipper tone.“I got King’s text last night.I see you’re still at his house.”
Well, she was using his phone.“Yeah, I’m here,” Mia replied.“I just made a pot of coffee.”She leaned against the counter and watched as the pot slowly filled with the dark brew, wondering vaguely why he didn’t have a Keurig.
“Hmmm.Already playing house?”There was laughter in her voice.“You two move fast.”
“Hopefully not too fast.”Mia hadn’t meant to say it out loud.“I’ve never had a one-night stand before.”It felt like more to her, but she wasn’t going to admit that.
