People leap out of the way.

I make a left. Then a right.

Oh! One way street… the wrong way.

Horns blare. Cars swerve. A second later, I burst onto a wider road. But traffic is snarled.

No!

Behind me, I see men running toward the truck, weaving in and out of the cars.

I put the truck in reverse, and try to maneuver around toward an alley, but it’s too tight.

A motorcycle roars up beside me. The driver has on a helmet but the man in the back doesn’t, and as soon as my gaze collides with his, I recognize him. It’s the man from the compound. The one that leered at me. This time, he’s murderous… and armed.

I’m frozen. Glued to the driver’s seat with all the blood draining to my toes when everyone around us suddenly looks up.

What is that sound?

Whomp. Whomp. Whomp.

Debris takes flight. Trash, paper, plastic, and dust.

Then a monstrous shadow darkens the street.

A voice comes from above, cast out from a loudspeaker. “Put your guns down!”

I hinge forward and crane my neck.

A strangled laugh comes out of me.

Figures a SEAL would bring a machine gun and a chopper…

ChapterThirty-Nine

I keep my muzzle trained on the men surrounding the truck. As soon as Evan and I spotted a truck tear down a gate and a flash of red hair, we knew we had hit pay dirt.

Now to get her the hell out of here…

Evan positions the bird so he can fire. “I’ll lay down some cover.”

“Copy that.”

A burst of machine gun fire hitting the pavement sends people scrambling.

“Steady now. Going down. Over.”

A second later, I’m boots on ground, trotting toward the truck, moving from one place of cover to another.

The previously busy street has a ghost-town vibe. Only, I know there are plenty of bad guys just feet away. If it weren’t for the chopper’s fire power, the odds of getting out of this without holes would be slim to none.

I duck behind a car and scan. Just one more push and I’ll be there.

The chopper wash coats me in dirt and debris as I peer around the corner. Twenty feet. Easy run.

A random gunshot rings out.

Evan lays down a line of fire in the middle of the street. That’s my opening.
