“Beast is missing. We’re mobilizing.”

I scramble out of the chair, losing my balance so badly that Truck has to catch me. “How is he missing?”

“Evan and Scout left him to run the op, they saw our missing woman.”

My heart stops. “They left him? How can they leave him? They’re a team!”

“The situation presented. They split.”

I almost sag to the floor.

Truck stops gathering gear and looks at me. “Camile, he’s a SEAL. He can operate alone. We just need to find him.”

My mouth is opening and closing as I slam my feet into my boots. “Can we call him, or track him or something?”

“Tried.”

My heart isn’t the only thing that’s stopped now. My blood is iced over. But my insides are shaking. “Oh, my god. Something terrible could have happened to him.”

“He’s a highly skilled operator.”

I gape at Truck’s back as he walks toward the door. “And that’s supposed to make me feel better right now?”

“It’s all I’ve got.” He steps out the door, into the dense, humid night.

I scramble to catch up. My synapses are coming online more and more. “Where is Nyx?”

“They’re getting ready to leave in the truck with Justice, Levi, and Belle. Evan and Scout are already in Carollia. We’re taking the helicopter.”

My heart is pounding, and my fingertips feel weak. A twinge hits my bladder that I get when I’m scared. “I’m running to the bathroom. I’ll be ready in a second.”

ChapterFifty-Eight

Now how I planned on spending my night. I glance at my watch and confirm it’s three.Argh.

I can’t believe it. I brush sweat from my brow, feeling the salty water that’s leaking from my face mix with the other sweat on my forearm.

This isn’t how I planned on my night going. I should have been in bed hours ago with Camile.

The op should have been wrapped and we should have cruised home, celebrating closing her case.

Should have.

But the end is in sight. So close I can pretty much touch it now.

A satisfied feeling settles into me, driving out the fatigue from rucking the last thirteen miles.

Now…

Now the good stuff.

A grin curls my mouth. Fuck, yes. This feels good. I never want this feeling to end.

I get to deliver the news that we got all the evidence Camile needs. But more importantly, I get her in my arms.

I realize now that she’s the light that chases my shadows. She softens the edge, letting me breathe again for the first time in years.

Now I feel light on my feet as I cut across the field behind the rental houses and pass between two of the small cabinas, not even bothering to see if both of the team’s trucks are in the parking area. Evan and Scout should be back, and hopefully with good news about locating and rescuing MZ.
