“No. Evan. No. I’m not letting?—”

He cups my face. “Oh, fuck, baby. I’m so sorry.”

Alarm bells are going off in every cell of my body. “What Evan, what’s happening?”

He drags me to him, crushing me against this sweat-slick chest. Now he’s shaking so hard my bones rattle. “I’m so fucking sorry to have to tell you this.”

My heart stops dead. Knees weak, I cling to him. “Please. I need you to tell me right now what you’re talking about.”

Broken. Shredded. His voice is ripped from his throat. “Peter.”

I turn ice cold, my feet twitching in my shoes. “Peter, what? Is he safe?”

Evan steps back and cups my face again, this time his hands are shaking hard.

The weight of dread in my body is enough to crush the entire earth.

Evan’s eyes go hard. “Peter owns this farm. Or he did. And he just sold it out from under you.”

What?

No. No.

“No, that can’t be true.”

“It’s done.”

Something ruptures inside of me.

I sob and Evan’s hands drag me against his chest and tighten on me to the point of hurting.

He holds me like this for a long time, then he puts me away from him. I stagger as I try to find my footing.

I’m scared out of my mind.

I’m looking at a man that I’ve never seen before.

“I’m going to kill him.”

A terrifying oath.

Chapter Fifty-Five

I’m two miles away from the ranch before I stop glancing in the rearview. Hell, I’m surprised that they don’t have the calvary coming after me or a helicopter landing on the road to block me. So it’s no surprise when my phone vibrates.

I didn’t leave the house without pissing off more than a half-dozen people.

But when Snoop Dogg blares Ba Da Da DaDa out of my phone speaker I know things just took a turn for the worse.

Goddamnit.

Would those sons of a bitches really call Lana on me?

Low. Really fucking low.

With a new kind of unease coating my tongue, I grab my phone and hit Accept. “Lana.” I clear my throat. “Hey, baby sis.”

“Ev.” She exhales. “You haven’t checked in and my dad has been worried sick.”
