“Jesus. Come on,” Demi murmured to me, and we made our escape quickly.

“Where are we going?” Demi asked as I tugged her behind me.

“Get a hamper from Mrs Ames and then outside. Wrap up warm again,” I said as we got away from her family.

“I’ve got to go back that way,” Demi replied, looking over her shoulder.

“Nope, there’re some stairs near the kitchen. Use them. I’ll meet you at the stables in ten minutes,” I muttered, leaning close as I saw Scout, Timmy, Jake, and Garrett watching. No chance was I letting those anywhere near my date.

As Demi scurried away, I beckoned the four and yanked out my wallet.

“Ten bucks each, and you leave me alone,” I offered.

“Fifteen!” Scout demanded.

“Ten. And be grateful. Otherwise, I’m sure I could tell Mom a few things, and you all might end up joining Eddie,” I negotiated.

“Man, you suck like a brother. You can afford fifteen, but we’ll take it,” Timmy said after they all swapped glances. Yeah, I had loads of blackmail material on those four.

“I’ll remember that come Christmas,” I retorted, and Timmy blanched.

“Timmy means he loves you lots, and you are the best big bro,” Scout backtracked quickly.

“Is that so?” Fanatic interrupted as he approached.

“Will you shut the hell up? You’re digging our graves,” Garrett hissed, smacking Scout around the back of his head.

“Seems I’m not needed as Ice is the best big brother. Saves me a packet come Christmas,” Fanatic added.

“No, dude, you and Ice are the bestest big brothers ever.” Scout grinned.

“Wow, that shit hurts,” Christian announced.

“Yeah, fancy us not being the best as well,” Jared replied.

I nearly choked on a laugh as Garrett and Jake glowered at Scout.

“Shut up!” they howled together.

“On that note, I’m gonna leave them with you. Seems they need reminding just how great all their brothers are,” I said to the older siblings and strode away.

“Tye is going on a date!” Scout snitched.

The little shit. I’d get him back later.

“We guessed that. But you need to pick the best brother in the world because you know… you started it, Scout,” Fanatic stated.

“I’m gonna kill you!” Timmy yelled at Scout as I ducked down the hallway leading to the kitchen.

Scout was in serious trouble now. Tonight, I’d find out how he wriggled out of it.

“Afternoon, Tye,” Mrs Ames said as I entered the kitchen.

Erin, the full-time assistant to Mrs Ames, smiled shyly at me. She was a nice girl who’d worked here for two years since she was sixteen. Erin had applied for the job and worked after school, but she left a couple of months ago and was now full time. She seemed happy enough here.

“Mrs Ames. I’ve come to pick up my hamper,” I replied, giving her a kiss.

“It’s over there. There’s a lunch there and two flasks of hot chocolate. Enjoy yourself.” Mrs Ames waved a hand towards thetable and concentrated on rolling pastry. Looked like we were having meat pies tonight.
