“Then I guess you can lie to yourself long enough for Steve to win her over,” he says, before walking back out of the tent.

Ugh. Steve. The faceless bane of my existence. Probably works in finance or accounting. Ugh. Or worse, what if he’s like Gentry? Some fucking Southern gentleman cowboy rancher man? Double Ugh. Must find out what I’m dealing with.

Crap. Excuse me, Jensen? It would appear you fucking like Harper. At the very least, I’m attracted to her. Or whatever. Awesome. I should find her. I should definitely go find her before this lunch thing kicks off.

I run back toward the main house where they’ve set up tables and chairs for the event. Harper told me something like thirty women were coming. Aunts, cousins, old high school friends, people from their grandparents’ church. It all sounds so exhausting to me just thinking about it. I round the corner of the barn and see a crowd gathered in the yard right next to the house. Their laughter is filling the air and it appears the party is already in full swing. I’m too late. I try to step a little closer to see if I can catch a glimpse of Harper.

Shielding my eyes with my hand, I roll up on the front of my feet, attempting to peer over heads and through the crowd like somehow these two actions give me X-ray vision. I catch sight of her long, blonde hair flowing behind her. She’s standing with her back toward me, leaning against a table, and appears to be in conversation with someone. I pull my phone from my pocket and shoot her a text, then wait to see if she pulls it from her pocket, but nothing. Maybe she doesn’t have it on her.

I’m not going to be the one guy that causes a scene and goes walking into lady territory. No way. That’s too much. I’ll just have to wait. I can do that. Granted, it might be impatiently.

I tuck my phone back in and head back toward the cabin. A guitar and a beer await me.

I have a song to learn.
