“Just think about it,” she says, letting the car grow quiet for the rest of the ride back.

Therefore, I’m forced to think about it.

The truth is, I’m not good enough for Jensen. I’m plain, living in small-town nowhere, and divorced. Jensen is lively and beautiful and successful. He’s a total catch. Any woman would be lucky to have him. So asking me if I like him is a silly question. Who wouldn’t like someone like Jensen? But liking someone and being able to do something about it are two different things. That’s decided.

I pull my phone from my pocket, sixty-two percent sure I’m making the right decision.

Steve:No worries about last night!

Me:Are you free tonight?

Steve:Yeah, you wanna get dinner?

Me:Sure, let me know where to meet you.

I slip my phone back into my pocket, careful not to reveal what I’ve done to Cora. Besides, I still didn’t have any returned texts from Jensen, so how interested could he really be?

We pull onto the farm and collect the penis stuff, careful to hide it all from Lyla. I stash it in my room along with the outfit Cora selected for me. Then, I start getting ready for my date with Steve.

Yes, focus.Steve is nice, seems excited to meet you, has a decent job, is mildly attractive. Steve will do fine for a post-divorce first-date experience. Except maybe I’m supposed to count Jensen as that? I don’t even know anymore.

I finish getting ready and check myself out in the mirror. Not wanting to go too over the top, I chose a simple maxi style dress, which hugs the top of my torso nicely and then flares from just the right curves. I apply light makeup and finish the look with a few jewelry pieces, then curl the ends of my hair into soft waves. This will do nicely, I decide.

Grabbing my clutch, I make my way downstairs and head for my car.

I still have time to turn this day around, to make it suck a little less.
