I can’t help myself and start to laugh hard too. “You’re insane.”

“Whatever. Just don’t rock us, you jackass.” She giggles again.

I hold her close to me, pulling her to me and kissing the top of her head. “Scout’s honor.”

“Were you ever really a Scout?” she asks.

“No, but that’s not the point. I would never dishonor them.”

Harper punches me in the chest and I catch her wrist, pulling her even closer. I press my forehead to hers and her eyes close. I nip her bottom lip and then lick. This is all it takes before her mouth is pressed hard against mine, parting my lips with her tongue. I open for her, letting her tongue lap against mine. It’s as if she’s trying to devour me and it’s so fucking hot I have to pull back lest we have a boner situation on this family friendly ride.

“Fuck,” I breathe.

She lays her head on my chest and sighs. “The feeling is mutual.”

The feeling is mutual. But is it? Is it really?I think about what it would mean if it actually was, if she really knew what I was thinking and feeling. Would she still say it’s mutual?

“What are you thinking?” she asks, like she can just fucking sense that I’m having a moment here.

“Nothing really,” I lie. “I’m just thinking about the places we can eat for lunch.” God, that’s pathetic. I could’ve at least been semi-truthful.

“Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m in the mood for seafood. Specifically shrimp. Some sort of battered shrimp. Is that possible?” she asks.

And even though I’m a fucking liar who wants to tell her the truth, I don’t. “Yeah, of course. This is the coast.” I press my eyes shut, willing myself to get a grip. There’s still a lot of day left, Jensen. You can’t go ruining it this fucking early.

Harper leans up, looking out the bubble toward the ocean, her eyes lighting up as we reach the top. “Wow,” she says. “This is amazing.”

She looks back at me, her lips pulled back into a wide smile. This is her best face. I love all of her faces. Serious. Sexy. Even the sad ones. But my favorite is when she’s happy. Not just a little happy, but so happy she smiles with her teeth.

I watch her as we go around. I watch her watching the world around us, taking everything in. I can’t help but admire her, be in awe of her. She deserves so much more than what she’s been given in the past. I hope in some small way, I’ve helped make up for what she’s been through. At the very least, I hope she sees not all men are like her ex-husband. That guy was a total asshat.

When the ride ends, we step off and I push my thoughts to the side so I can stay in the moment with her.

“What next?” she asks.

Exactly,I think to myself. What next?
