“What?” she says.

“Nothing. You’re just perfect.”

Harper huffs a laugh. “You’ve had too much sugar.”

“I’m not sugar high. If anything, I’m drunk on you.”

Harper laughs harder, but takes note of my serious demeanor and stops, maintaining eye contact.

“Let’s go to bed,” I whisper.

She nods as she lifts herself from my lap. She leads me upstairs by hand, the noise of the movie melting away into the background. I’m not remorseful she didn’t finish the movie. There’s plenty of time for movies; not enough time for us.

Harper drags her shirt up over her head, giving me the expanse of her naked back, and I have an urge to trace the curve of her spine with my index finger.

It’s in this moment, this exact moment, that I realize I’m in love with her. I don’t know when I actually fell in love with her, and I suspect it was before now. But this is the moment I’ll remember as when I knew it, when I got my head out of my ass and realized it.

I love her.

Because she asked me to lick her cookie.
