Benson heard it. “Don’t take that tone with me. Your boyfriend and his cousin are far from clean, and you’re in bed with at least one of them.”
Ooh, now he was taking potshots at them?
Baz rolled his eyes. “Just with me. I don’t share well with others.”
“The detective is a lovely lady,” Yvgeny added. “But she’s not my type.”
“So, let me get this straight,” Sam said. “You admit that the guy we brought in is a nasty piece of work and should be charged with attempted murder, but you’re not sure you’ll support charges because you don’t like the Breznik cousins?”
“My personal feelings don’t come into this,” Benson snapped.
“You weren’t gone very long on your phone calls,” Yvgeny said. “And you returned even more irritated than when you left. Did someone order you to play nice with us nasty Brezniks?”
When Benson stared at him with derision on his face, Yvgeny had his answer. He shook his head. “It’s going to be hard working with us if you can’t trust us with anything at all.”
“Why don’t you just tell us what you want from us?” Baz asked. “Then we can tell you if we can provide it or not.”
“I don’t agree with sharing information with you, but I’ve been overruled.”
“Who overruled you?” Nika asked.
“The FBI, the French Directorate-General for Internal Security, the German Federal Intelligence Service, and the Brazilian Intelligence Agency.”
“So...” Baz drew out the word.
“We would like to put agents into your organization,” Benson said to Yvgeny. “In places where they might be more likely to witness or hear of this human trafficking ring.”
“And what else would they be doing?” Yvgeny asked.
When Benson frowned, Yvgeny added, “Given your distrust of me, how can I doubt that they’ll have additional orders to snoop in all kinds of places?”
“That just makes you sound guilty of something.”
“I prefer the word cautious, besides,” Yvgeny said with a small smile. “Your task force already has an agent embedded in my organization.”
Benson looked at Yvgeny like he thought he was crazy.
Baz started laughing and said to Yvgeny, “Look at his face. He doesn’t know.”
Benson glared at Baz. “The FBI said they got someone in, but said he wasn’t in a position to find out much.”
“Is that what the FBI said?” Yvgeny asked. The FBI certainly didn’t give the NYPD the full story. Why weren’t the two agencies getting along? He grinned at the lieutenant. “I hired a young man to be my assistant. An FBI agent. He was one of six law enforcement people who applied.”
“How did you know he’s FBI?” Benson asked.
“Because I do through checks on all prospective employees.”
“You knew before you hired him?”
“Obviously.”
“Why would you hire an FBI agent to be your assistant?”
“I got tired of all the various law enforcement agencies trying to get agents into my staff. I decided it would be fun to hire one to see what they would do.”
Benson looked at him with his mouth hanging open.
“And he’s bored,” Baz said.
