“Okay,” Sam said slowly.
“No,” Yvgeny said. “It’s not okay. She’s going to come here, criticize everything, and order me to change things.”
“I thought she was happy about something.”
“Yeah, she says that, but actually, she wants something and no one else is going to like what she does with it.”
“What does she want?” Baz asked.
Sam huffed. “Yvgeny, we need to talk, but I also need to have a shower. I can still feel that asshole’s hands on me.”
“Shower now. I’ll talk to Baz, then we talk?” he asked.
“Yeah, that will work, but if you blow me off again, I’m gone.” She turned on her heel, walked into the spare bedroom and closed the door.
“Um, sir?” Brian asked. “What do you want me to do?”
“Make sure all your underwear is clean,” Yvgeny told him. “My aunt is very thorough.”
Brian swallowed. “Sir, did one of the cabs actually explode?”
“Yes, mine,” Baz said. “You want some fun intel to send along to your other bosses? Tell them there might be some interesting out of towners in the city who are looking to cause trouble.”
“Oh sure, sic the FBI on them,” Yvgeny said, rolling his eyes. “That’s a good way to get a large number of special agents killed.”
“Who are these people?” Brian asked. “What makes them so dangerous?”
“They’re likely from South America. Angry about the disagreement we had with some other South Americans a couple of weeks ago.”
“They’re dangerous because they don’t care about laws or anyone but themselves. They won’t hesitate to kill anyone in their way, and they don’t care how many other people die as collateral damage.”
“Can you give me anything that identifies them? I could make sure law enforcement is looking for them.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea. Law enforcement would end up as part of the collateral damage.”
Brian’s eyebrows rose. “Really?”
“Think of it like this,” Baz said. “Imagine for a moment that a large group of terrorists have entered the United States and concentrated in one city. They have weapons and explosives, and their goal is to kill people and destroy property. They want to cause panic and disorder.”
Brian’s face paled. “I desperately want to tell my FBI bosses about these guys.”
Yvgeny met Baz’s gaze. “Maybe we should let him involve law enforcement?”
“I don’t know. They’ll probably just get in the way.”
“Not necessarily,” Yvgeny argued. “Not if we cooperate with each other, coordinate our efforts. Isn’t that what we’re supposed to be doing?”
“You are?” Brian asked.
“I suppose so,” Baz answered. “But I also think it’s going to get some of them killed.”
“Most of the agents are very well trained,” Brian said.
“I don’t think these people are going to behave in a way that’s expected. They will be brutal and unlikely to want to talk or negotiate. They will probably act as if they’re behind enemy lines.”
“All the more reason to have law enforcement involved. They can react more quickly if they’re prepared.”
“The only problem is,” Yvgeny said slowly. “We think there are people inside law enforcement in New York City who are informing the bad guys and possibly even helping them.”
