He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
“Yvgeny,” Baz said, sounding like he was out of patience. “Sit down before you fall down. Again.”
Yvgeny kicked one of Robert’s legs, then backed up until he reached the wall behind him and slid down it until his butt hit the floor.
“Feel better now?” Baz asked him.
Yvgeny flipped his middle finger at his cousin.
It was only then that Sam realized the fight was over, and all the attackers were down. She leaned closer, studying the bodies. Was that a pile of heads near the elevator doors?
“They’ve been decapitated,” she whispered.
“The Breznik family is definitely a bunch of criminals,” Brian said.
“Last I heard,” Nika said in a very New York drawl. “Self-defense was legal in this country.”
“But they...” Brian pointed at the screen.
Nika shrugged. “What would you have done if you’d been up there? Let those British assholes kill you or fight back?”
“Baz was the only one with a gun,” Sam whispered. “And he didn’t even use it once things got going.”
“Old habits,” Nika said. “He’s used to using his fists more than a firearm.”
Brian glanced at the stairs leading to the only exit for the room. “I would really like to leave. I should report this.”
“The worst thing you could do right now, is leave,” Nika said. “Until we know it’s safe, we’re staying right here.”
“What about Yvgeny and Baz?” Sam asked.
“They would not appreciate the distraction,” Nika told her, then turned to Brian. “Who would you report this to? What, exactly, would you say in this report?”
“That Yvgeny was attacked. They blew up the employee entrance, deliberately starting a fire, all to...what?” He frowned. “What is their goal with all this, killing the Breznik family? Or has it got something to do with you, Sam?”
“I don’t know. Why would I have anything to do with what’s going on? I don’t understand any of this.”
“Well, people seem to be looking for you.”
The fire alarm cut off, yet Sam’s ears continued to ring.
On the screen, Yvgeny lifted his head and tilted it back until it rested against the wall behind him. His eyes were closed and he looked like he was asleep. Or dead.
The door to the secret stairs opened, slamming hard against the wall next to it.
Mason and Magnus stepped through the narrow doorway, dragging a man each. Men in dark blue suits, stained with blood. The two enforcers forced the men on their knees at Baz’s feet.
One of them moaned and both of them struggled and attempted to get away from the twins.
Mason and Magnus held them in place easily.
Baz considered them. “Cannon fodder,” he said, looking at the man on the left. He glanced over his shoulder at Yvgeny. “Dinner’s ready.”
“No, please,” the man said.
Yvgeny opened his eyes and looked at the man who continued to beg.
Beg for what? What the hell did Baz mean by dinner’s ready?
