“I wouldn’t say that. I keep running into assholes and stupid people, and you know how much I hate those.”

She signaled her men to pick up the British vampire.

“Tell your people to stay the fuck out of New York,” Baz said. “If we find them here, we’re not going to stop to chat about old times. They’re just going to die.”

“It’s a big city,” the Brit said. “You can’t stop everyone from getting in. Someone is going to take your women from you.”

“That won’t be an issue for long.” Yvgeny’s aunt said. “Take him to his private jet.” She looked at the man. “Or did you come by boat?”

“Jet,” he winced.

Mason said something in a low voice. “Sir, the police are here, and the fire department wants to do a walkthrough of the building.”

Yvgeny glanced at the bodies and the pile of heads. “Yes, I suppose we need to get this mess cleaned up as well.”

“You should shower, sir,” Mason said. “I can keep the police busy. Begin their inspection at the bottom of the building.”

“Is everything ready for this inspection?”

“The only space we need to prepare is this apartment.”

“Very good. Carry on.” Yvgeny nodded and strode toward his bedroom. He would have rather gone to Sam’s bedroom and down into the safe room, but there wasn’t time with the police onsite.

The only thing that kept him from telling the rest of the world to fuck off was the fact that Sam wanted to kick the British jerk in the nuts. She might want to do the same to him. Or possibly tell him he was a monster, then run away, but that didn’t seem to be where her head was at.

Besides, he wasn’t sure he could let her go.

He showered quickly and put on fresh clothing. The scent of cleansers thick in the air made its way under the door. Yuck.

When he emerged from his bedroom, he found the mess of blood, bodies, and body parts cleaned up. And a new problem he was going to have to solve.

Sam had faced off with his aunt, her arms crossed over her chest and her face wearing her fuck off expression. It was kind of nice to see it aimed at someone else for a change.

His aunt was mid sentence. “...all we need is an ultra-sound to see if you still have your ovaries, then—”

Sam cut her off. “No. No fucking way am I allowing that quack of a doctor to touch me again. He performed tests on my blood that I was unaware of, then he revealed the results to someone other than me.”

“He’s an excellent doctor, at the top of his field,” his aunt said in a placating tone he’d only ever heard her use with Baz.

“He’s untrustworthy,” Sam said, dropping the words like they weighed a thousand pounds each. “And quite frankly, so are you.” She glanced around the room at the people cleaning up the mess and paused ever so slightly at the men his aunt had brought. “I watched the entire shitshow you, your men, and those British people put on, from start to finish. Do you know what I figured out?”

He had to stop her. His aunt would only take so much criticism before she lashed out.

“Samantha,” he said, walking toward the two women. “Perhaps now isn’t a good time for—”

She cut him off, too. “No, I will speak my peace.” Her gaze returned to his aunt’s face. “And then I won’t speak of this again. To anyone.”

His aunt lifted a hand to stop Yvgeny. “Let her speak, nephew. She has a right to it.”

“How generous,” Sam said in the same scathing tone she’d once used on him.

His aunt only smiled. “What mystery did you unravel?”

“That Yvgeny is the only reason none of you are dead.”

What?

He wasn’t the only one surprised. Every other vampire in the room stopped to stare at her.
