“You make a pretty good caregiver,” he complimented.

“Who would have known?” she said self-depreciatingly.

“I love you, Darcy. Thank you.”

“You make it easy, Sam. You never complain, you’re so upbeat. I honestly don’t know how you do it,” she said. “I would be climbing the walls by now.”

“It would be a whole different story if you weren’t here with me,” he admitted.

“I doubt it,” she replied. “This is just the kind of man that you are.”

“Did someone mention food?” he said, doing a complete one-eighty.

“Wait, I think I just suffered a whiplash,” she laughed. “What would my best patient like to have for dinner?”

“A grilled cheese sandwich sounds good, and a piece of Millie’s pie,” he answered quickly.

“You got it.”

Much later, as they lay in bed, Darcy read a book while Sam curled around her, sound asleep. She felt a peace and contentment that she never could have dreamt was possible. She felt whole, the emptiness from before now filled and flowing into every cell of her being. She kissed the top of Sam’s mop of hair and drew in his male scent. Placing her book on the bedside table, she reached over and switched off the lamp. Turning onto her side, she spooned into Sam, his front body enveloping her back body, and she was asleep within minutes.

It had been almost two weeks since Sam had been released from the hospital and life had returned to normal…sort of. He was able to fend for himself, for the most part, so Darcy had officially moved back to her own place. But she was still keeping a close eye on Sam and, between her and Casey, he was being somewhat smothered with concern. Not that he minded. He seemed very capable of accepting all of the attention his favorite women had to give.

“I think you’re liking this patient role a little too much!” Darcy said laughing.

“Whomoi?”he said grinning.

“Don’t act all innocent,” Darcy admonished, “I’m onto you!”

“Baby, come give me a big kiss. Your patient is feeling a little neglected,” Sam said, pulling her onto his lap and planting a big kiss on her lips.

“I love you, Darcy,” he said suddenly serious.

“Sam, I love you, too. I don’t even want to think about what my life would be like if I had lost you.” She shuddered, recalling his accident and how close she had been to losing him.

“Please don’t go,” he whined, “I need you here.”

“I have to finish up some things at the office or I’ll end up bankrupt,” she said.

“Will I see you tonight?”

“I’ll see what I can do. If not tonight, tomorrow for sure,” she promised. “Casey has dinner for tonight covered, so you will be fine,” she teased.

“I won’t have an appetite without you here,” he joked.

“On that note, I’m out of here. It’s official, I have completely spoiled you!”

“Bye Babe, be safe,” Sam said, reluctantly letting her get off of his lap.

“Sam please take it easy and stay out of trouble yourself. You still have a long way to go, but the doctor said you are healing incredibly fast,” she said, briefly brushing her lips against his before leaving for work.

Back at the office, Darcy sat at her desk, organizing files on the Cohen case so she could submit the invoice for payment. She had completed the task she had been hired to do, but she hated when a job felt incomplete. She knew she hadn’t solved the puzzle by a long shot, and that bothered her curious nature a whole lot.
