“You are so fucking weird.”

“But you love me.”

Jay sighed. “Yes, I love you. Especially when you ask me these questions. I can never guess why you ask them.” He grinned. “Do you know how adorable you are when you do that?”

“When do I do what?” I was already thinking about why all men can’t be like male bees, serving their queen forever. I smiled, though Jay did treat me like a queen.

“That.” He pointed to my face. “When you think of something weird and ask me random questions, it’s the cutest fucking thing I have ever seen in my life.”

“I am a puppy now?” I asked

“What?” His eyes widened. “I wasn’t calling you a puppy.”

“But puppies are cute. And so am I,” I announced.

Jay threw his head back, laughing. “You are cuter than a puppy, babe.”

“I know,” I bragged.

“Cutest fucking shit ever,” Jay declared, looking at me.

I was pretty sure I was going to get my period soon. I was so tired, and my brain was muddled. I leaned into Jay’s arm as we walked to school. I knew if I was tired like this before my period, it was going to be a bad one.

“Are you excited for the show this Friday?” I asked him.

The guys finally landed a major gig in L.A. It would be the biggest show they had played till now. It was the perfect place for the major scouts to show up. Katy had been in talks with a smaller record label from Seattle, but it was nothing compared to the ones in L.A.

“Yeah, it’s going to be big. I know it. The guys are very excited.”

The band had been practicing nonstop for the past week. I only saw Jay during mornings like this and when he came by late at night to sleep over. I busied myself with homework and chores during that time.

I yawned. “You will be amazing. I am sad. I am going to miss it.”

The guys would be driving down this Thursday. Only Katy would be joining them, so she could try to talk to any of the scouts or get more contacts to help the band.

“You okay?” Jay asked, concerned. “You seem tired.”

“Yeah, I think I am going to get my period soon.” I sighed into his arms.

“Awh, my poor baby,” he said, rubbing my back.

The day only went downhill from there. I felt worse and worse. By the second period, I was struggling to even lift my book. I felt so hot—maybe I was coming down with something. Great, just great. My vision clouded as I climbed up to the first floor. A sudden wave of nausea hit me as my feet missed a step and I went tumbling down the stairs.

Oh, God. Ouch, that hurt.My vision was still blurry as I tried to get up, but my body wouldn’t allow it. My ankle burned with pain. I was pretty sure it was broken. A few students crowded me as they tried to help me up.

But suddenly a pair of familiar arms lifted me onto his lap. “Evy, sweetheart. You, okay?” Jay asked as he touched my forehead. “Fuck, you are burning up.” He cursed under his breath. “Mikey, get the car!”

He stood up with me in his arms. I closed my eyes as the pain overtook me. I was safe, though, in his arms.

“She is going to be fine. Please, stop yelling, sir. This is a hospital.”

“Look at her. She is not fine. When will the doctor get here? Her aunt works here. Where is she?”

“Emerson, honey! Oh, God. What happened to her?” I heard a familiar voice speak as I drifted in and out of consciousness.

I felt a warm, soft hand caressing my forehead.
