Page 70 of From Me to You
Katy gave a dramatic sigh. “I can never get through to you. Evy, please help me.”
“I am sure Lily can wear anything she feels comfortable in.” I shrugged.
“You are of no help. But it’s obvious you will take her side because you love her brother.” Katy pointed her finger at me in accusation.
I laughed.
“Little Mouse wouldn’t look good in anything but black,” Mikey chimed in with a sly grin on his face.
I felt Jay stiffen beside me. I sighed internally. He was never going to accept the fact that Lily liked Mikey. I also had my suspicion that it was reciprocated, but Jay wouldn’t hear it. I think he knew it too but was still in denial.
Lily glared at Mikey as she looked up from her notepad, and he just full-on grinned. She blushed and averted her gaze back to the notebook.
Tomorrow, we had planned a little Christmas/Jay’s pre-birthday dinner at mine. For actual Christmas, Aunty M and I would be celebrating at the Jameson’s.
“You ready to go?” Jay asked just as I finished up my hot chocolate.
“Yeah,” I mumbled, getting up. We planned to head to the grocery store to pick out some last-minute items that we needed for tomorrow. Everyone was going to be bringing in something—we were tasked with dessert, so I was making brownies and chocolate chip cookies.
We waved everyone goodbye and exited Lola’s. A freezing wind ripped through the air. God, it was so cold. I huddled up close to Jay, trying to keep warm as we walked to the store.
“You need eggs, sweetheart?” Jay asked, holding an egg carton. We had been at the store for about ten minutes now and almost got everything except for chocolate.
“Yeah,” I mumbled while contemplating what brand of chocolate to buy.
Jay snaked his arms around me and plopped his chin on my shoulder. “Are you making a decision?”
“Yeah,” I mumbled again.
He grinned. “Then it’s going to take a while.”
“Ugh.” I elbowed his ribs.
“Ouch.” He pouted as if it really hurt him. But he only cuddled me up tighter. And sighed happily.
“I am a Libra rising and a Libra moon, Jay. Of course, this is hard for me,” I whined. “Please choose for me,” I said, pointing to the shelf.
He took the first one he laid his eyes on.
“That easy?” I gawked at him, feeling so jealous that he could decide that easily.
“Yes, that easy. Now I wonder how you chose me so quickly to be your boyfriend. Thank God you didn’t have many suitors.” He laughed as he took the cart to the cash counter.
I rolled my eyes as I followed him. I was peering at the colorful mints on the stands by the checkout. I wondered why they always had so many mints here.
“Sir, your card is not working,” the lady at the cash counter exclaimed.
“Try again, please.” Jay ran his hands through his hair.
“No, sir, it still doesn’t work.”
“What’s wrong?” I linked my arm with him.
“My card won’t work, and I didn’t bring in any cash,” he mumbled, his cheeks flushed red with embarrassment.
“I can take care of it, Jay. Don’t worry,” I said as I handed the lady some cash that I had in my wallet.
Jay never let me pay for anything, so I didn’t bother offering to pay. But it looked like he was running low on cash.
