“I love you.” I smiled shyly at the passionate lust crowding his eyes.

“I love you more,” Jay promised with a kiss on my forehead.

CHAPTER 19

The Sangers charity ball was a fancy affair. There was an elaborate red carpet with photographers outside who were taking pictures of everyone. Jay knew they made me uncomfortable, so he took me through the side entrance.

I had told Jay before that I wanted to keep our relationship very private—I didn’t want anyone to know outside our circle, especially the media. It made me anxious. There were already plenty of press articles and gossip about the guys, particularly Jay. The media loved him. I was glad they still hadn’t figured out about me, and I hoped it stayed that way.

However, the rest of the gang soaked up all the attention like pros.

Katy was beautiful in her red wrap dress that hugged her in all the right places. She grinned with Lan by her side who was in a dark navy blue tux that suited him.

Matt wore a black tux similar to Jay’s, but he had a tie and a vest to go with it. Mikey was so obnoxious in his white dress shirt that he almost unbuttoned to his waist showing off his tattoos and wore black dress pants that had suspenders that held them up. The girls screamed when they saw him, and he grinned like he knew exactly what he was doing.

The Crash Riders were all dressed in a similar fashion, wearing just a vest and pin-stripe beige pants. It was interesting that they were all pretty much wearing the same thing.

The Ball didn’t look like it was for charity at all—it looked like a toned-down version of a rockstar party. Apparently, the charity was raising money to teach kids music and provide them with musical instruments. I was pretty sure that it was just a front they put up to make them seem like they were holy. You didn’t need a party to donate for kids—if you had the heart you could do that in the comfort of your own home.

The inside was so dark, with red roses arranged everywhere and a low-hanging chandelier casting a golden glow throughout the hall. The tables were elaborate, with black velvet cloths and massive flower arrangements in the center. There were also candles littered throughout the room, which made it seem like a fire hazard. I wondered if they were real.

“Here you go.” Jay handed me a glass of water because he knew I preferred water to soda or alcohol.

And he was so cute. “Thank you,” I said, kissing his cheek.

“What was that for?” He laughed.

“Just so all the girls who are checking you out know that you are taken.” I grinned.

Jay threw his head back and laughed.

“Don’t do that,” I hissed. “They are gawking at you now. I wish I could gouge out their eyes. Maybe I should put a board on your neck that says you are ‘Evy’s Man’. Maybe that might work.” I considered doing it, but knowing these girls, even a ring on his finger wasn’t going to stop them.

He laughed harder. “I love how you make me laugh all the time. It’s like I am actually alive when I am with you. You are the weirdest and most adorable person I have ever met,” Jay concluded.

I smiled proudly and said, “Good.”

We shared the table with the Crash Riders, with Will sitting next to me. I had actually warmed up a lot to him over the past few days—he was so down to earth underneath all that rock star attitude that he put up. I couldn’t believe a famous person was kind of my friend now.

White approached us wearing the tightest white dress that stuck to her body, showing her lean, skinny form. Her lips were a shiny nude, and her makeup and hair were done to the T. Her silver pumps made her legs look longer than they already were.

“Hey, Cece.” Jay nodded.

“Hey, Emmie.” She smiled, leaning in to hug him, her hands grazing lower than they should on his waist, while Jay’s were respectfully on her shoulders.

He let go, smiling as he leaned back into his seat. She occupied the seat next to him. I was seething—this woman definitely had a thing for my man, and I didn’t like it one bit.

“Foxes,” Will whispered under his breath. Thank God I wasn’t alone. He noticed it too.

“I know right,” I whispered.

White greeted Katy as though they were long-lost best friends and hadn’t seen each other in years. I missed Lily. She grounded us.

I picked up my phone to shoot a text to Lily with pictures that we had taken before the event. Especially a lot of pictures of Mikey so she could drool over him. I was totally on board with Lily and Mikey. Even if Mikey himself was in denial, he was a good man, and Lily deserved a good man. But she wasn’t going to wait for long if Mikey didn’t get his head out of his ass and stop screwing the entire nation and ended up with herpes or worse.

White turned to me finally, like she hadn’t noticed me at all before this “Evy, OMG, you look so gorgeous. The dress lookssplendid on you. I knew I had a good eye when I told you it would fit you perfectly.”

I was so confused because I was pretty sure I was the one who selected the dress. Because it was pink. But I went with it. I think she suffered from a delusional disorder.
