What do I say? What excuse is good enough that won’t make him ask questions I don’t want to answer right now, maybe ever. I come up with the only logical thing I can think of in the moment. A sob breaks free which turns into a cough.

When I finally get control of my body and emotions, I choke out, “Yeah, but I could use a friend right now.”

With zero hesitation in his voice, he says, “On my way, Angel.”

Chapter Eleven

Grayson

WhenLogancalled,Iwas walking out of the shop after a late-night session with a client from California.

She sounded sad, and the minute she said she could use a friend, I didn’t even think twice about going to see her.

Getting in my truck, the engine rumbles to life and I wait for the phone to connect to the speaker. “Logan, can you hear me?”

“Yeah, I’m here. You don’t have to come. I’m sorry. I don’t even know what I’m saying.”

“If you need me to come over, I will. I’m just leaving the shop,” I say in a tone that makes her understand that I’m serious.

I sit back in my seat and wait for her response.

Her voice shakes as she speaks, “Yeah. C-can you come over? I could really use a friend and maybe a drink. I promise I won’t keep you l-long.”

Fuck. Hearing her voice shake like this breaks my heart.

I’m not a medical professional, but I don’t think being sick would make you react like this. Something bad must have fucking happened. Anger builds in my chest at the thought of anyone hurting my girl.

Taking a deep breath and cracking my neck, I calm myself before replying, “I’ll be there. Angel, I know you’re the nurse and probably know more than I do with this stuff, but should you be drinking while you’re sick?”

Logan growls and I try not to laugh. “Shit. You’re right.”

“Coffee?” I ask.

She clears her throat. “Yeah, I won’t be going to sleep anytime soon anyways. You really don’t have to come. I’m just having a moment and you were the first person I thought to call.”

Fucking hell.

I don’t think she realizes by saying shit like that, I will do whatever she wants.

“I’m coming over. I’m not leaving you alone when you sound like someone kicked your damn puppy.”

She lets out a small laugh. I expect her to say one of her snappy comebacks that are slowly becoming one of my favorite things about her, but she doesn’t. Her voice shakes as she says, “Okay. See you soon-n.”

Shit. She really is messed up about something.

I go to put the truck in reverse but pause.“Logan?”

“Yeah.”

“I need your address, pretty girl.”

I hear her curse under her breath. “Shit, sorry. Don’t be mad.”

My hands grip the steering wheel, my knuckles turning white. “Why would I be mad?”

She pauses and I hear commotion on the other side of the phone, but I can’t tell what it is. I release my grip on the wheel and take my hat off. I drop it on the center console and brush fingers through my hair when she responds.

“I live in Cliff Haven,” she says quietly.
