Page 73 of His Daggered Heart

Thelastmonthhasbeen pretty relaxed. Kohen and Levi took time off from training, winter break just started, and Cora and I are enjoying the pregnant life. The guys cater to us like queens and we let them. Everything has been smooth sailing except for Raymond trying to contact Kohen but luckily it’s just been through email. We sold the mansion and bought a house further out on the outskirts of the city. Travel time isn’t too bad and Levi is building a house on the property for him and Cora.

Our house is being built as well. So until it’s ready, all of us are staying at the humble little home that belonged to me and Cora. Levi has been fixing it up because the guys decided that the kids would have this house when they go to school here. It feels odd sometimes to be in our early twenties and to have life figure itself out for us but I guess it happens that way sometimes. I think that Cora and Levi are soulmates the same way Kohen and I are. In fact, I have a gut feeling that in every lifetime we four will always find each other. There is nothing more meant to be than the found family we created. I would endure every single hardship in my life one thousand times over to be right here right now.

“Alex Monroe,” the nurse calls out into the waiting room.

“Yes. That’s me,” I answer.

“We are ready for you.”

All four of us get up at the same time.

“Woah is it all of you?”

“Yes,“ I admit.

“I’m sorry but we can only allow the father in, it’s protocol,” she says.

I look over at my best friends and they assure me it’s fine. So Kohen and I follow the nurse to the back. She hands me a cup to pee in and leads Kohen into the sonogram room. This OBGYN is highly sought after so we were lucky to get in this quick. Kohen did urge it more since we need to figure out exactly how far along I am, and make sure everything is fine since I didn’t know I was pregnant for so long.

I leave the little cup in the metal cabinet, wash my hands, and exit the restroom, walking to the room that the nurse took Kohen to.

The little room is dark but my eyes adjust quickly. “You okay, angel?” The memories of all the times he has asked me that and I wasn’t okay at those moments flip through my mind like the pages of a story. Our story. This time, I am okay.

“Yes,” I smile. “Just nervous. I hope everything is okay.”

“It will be.”

“Please undress from the waist down and put this on. Put the opening to the back and the sonogram tech will be right in,” the nurse advises.

“Okay, thank you,” Kohen says. “Need help, angel?” he asks and I laugh.

“No, Kohen, I can manage.”

We wait a while, both of us quiet. Kohen looks through all the drawers and cabinets, examining the contents of them when a knock raps on the door. “Coming in,” the small voice warns. “Hello, I am Alicia and I will be taking some photos of your baby today.”

“Okay,” I say quietly. My heart speeds up. Kohen comes to stand by my side, placing my hand in his and kissing my forehead. The nurse pulls my gown up, exposing my legs.

“It’s going to be a little uncomfortable but not worse than a pap smear, okay?”

I nod.

She penetrates my opening. A slight pressure builds but it isn’t painful.

Then she turns on the tv screen on the wall. There isn’t anything that resembles a baby, just blobs. “There is the heartbeat,” she says as the little whooshing sounds match the zig-zag lines on the screen. I turn to Kohen, tears in my eyes threatening to spill over. Joy fills me and my heart swells with a love I didn’t even know I was capable of feeling.

“That’s my baby,” I say quietly.

“Babies,” the nurse says. “There are two heartbeats.”

Kohen’s eyes widen and I choke on my spit. “Two?” he questions.

“Yes, two. Twins. Congratulations. It looks like they are identical. We can’t tell the sex yet but do twins run in your family?”

“No,” we say in unison.

“We are both an only child,” I say.

“Curious,” she states. “Well, you look to be about sixteen weeks. You can find out the genders at twenty weeks. You can set that appointment up when you check out.”
