“So, I have an idea.”

I’m hoping whatever his idea is comes with another round of his skilled tongue against my clit. I don’t care that fraternizing with employees is frowned upon, I’m happy to go to the HR department and sign whatever paperwork they need for me to play with Sterling’s dick.

Is he prepared to do the same? I guess we’re about to find out.

The crease between his brows and the lines around his mouth tell me we’re probably not on the same page here. He’s not about to offer me another steaming hot romp between the sheets.

A girl can hope.

But no amount of preparation or pranayama breathing could steady me for the words that tumble from his mouth as he looks at me with a completely straight face. “Marry me, Corabelle.”

CHAPTER 16

Sterling

My friendsaround Thor and Addison’s dining room table blink at us like we’ve just told them that not only are aliens real, but we have one in the back seat of my truck outside.

If they don’t buy the idea of me marrying Corabelle, no one else is going to. Something tells me this will be the most reserved reaction of all the people we know. As far as I know, we don’t really have tosellit. As long as Corabelle is married, she meets the criteria for her father’s wishes.

But until her lawyers go through the paperwork with a fine-tooth comb, I’d like to err on the side of caution. If I’m going to be her fake husband, I’m going to be the best fake husband the fine state of Minnesota has ever seen.

Thor and Jagger stare at me like I’ve lost my goddamn mind. If last minute additions to the soiree Slade and Paige weren’t outside arguing, Slade would definitely have a similar look on his face as well.

In hindsight, it probably wasn’t the smartest thing I’ve ever done, announced it before we’ve even eaten a bite and to people Corabelle largely doesn’t know. But I couldn’t hold itin, I need them to help me convince her it’s the smart play. Except that’s not really what’s happening right now.

Talia and Addison are accepting, don’t get me wrong. Everyone around the table is. But this... this declaration seems to have brought a stunned silence around the table.

“M-marriage?” It’s Talia who finds her voice first. She may be timid and quieter than some of our friends, but she’s come a long way in the months since she and Jagger committed to a relationship. It’s been beautiful to watch her grow from a wallflower into a freakin’ bird of paradise.

“Have you lost your fucking mind?” Her boyfriend, Jagger, isn’t as polite. “What the fuck? You’ve known each other for what? A week?”

Thor puts a hand on Jagger’s forearm. “Let’s hear him out.”

“Hear him out? What’s there to hear out?” Jagger turns to me. “You met last week, this week you’re proposing marriage?Marriage, Sterling. Till death do you part?Death.” He points at me. “That shit’s not for the faint hearted.”

Addison snorts. “He’s not wrong. I have to live with Thor’s thunder farts for the rest of my fucking life. He’s lucky he’s good with his tongue.”

Corabelle laughs.

Adi points at her. “You laugh, but I bet you’ve never even smelled Sterling’s farts. How do you know he isn’t toxic? It’s been a week. No one farts in front of each other after a week.”

Talia’s face grows so red it feels like there’s a story there, and from the smirk on Jagger’s face, he’s about to tell it. He waves his thumb between the two of them. “We did. We got snowed into Protocol, then a hotel. There was absolutely farting. From both of us.”

Talia’s face gets even redder.

“And yet she loved you anyway,” I challenge.

“It’s the dick piercings. She can’t get enough of them.”

Talia isn’t the only one who has come out of her shell since they got together. He’s still a grumpy fucker, but he’s not as quiet as he used to be.

Talia giggles. “Maybe he has smelly feet like Jagger.”

When he pins her with a glare, she laughs harder.

“Maybe she sheds her hair like a fucking Labrador,” he retorts.

Talia waves her hand in front of her face like she’s struggling to suck in air.
