“I had – Yes. I had a feeling something was going on, I just didn’t know for sure.”
“Well, you know now,” Tania sighs, taking a sip of her drink as she, thankfully, pulls her hand away from my arm. “Does it bother you?”
“Why would it?”
She shrugs. “Maybe you’re still carrying a torch for your ex-wife.”
“Maybe I am.”
Tania cocks her head and narrows her eyes. “Seriously?”
I lean back against the bar and drag a hand through my hair. “I’m not sure I’ve actually made it a secret that I still have feelings for Megan. That I regret, every day, the way I treated her, it’s pointless lying about it.”
“Have you toldherany of this?”
“In a way.”
“And…?”
“She isn’t interested. She doesn’t want to go back, and I knowIshould be moving forward too, but it’s hard.”
Tania smiles and puts her drink down, sidling closer to me, her hand resting on my shoulder, her breath warm against my cheek as she speaks. “Maybe you just need something to take your mind off Megan; make you realise youcanmove on, it really isn’t that hard.”
There’s a strange sensation kicking about in the pit of my stomach, and I’m not sure what it is, whether it’s my body telling me that, yes, I’m attracted to this woman, or whether it’s telling me to steer clear. I don’t know.
“It’s hard. It really is.”
Tania shakes her head, her red curls brushing lightly against my skin as her fingers stroke my shoulder, her entire body is leaning into me now, touching me, and I like it. Shit! Don’tIdeserve some fun, too? Megan might not want me, yet, but this woman does.Shewants me.
“Let’s get out of here,” she whispers.
And for once, I’m not going to put up a fight.

It’s been four days now, since Megan and Xander “went public”, and it’s all this town can talk about. Megan’s finally moved on, and look! She’s done it with the help of a handsome, younger stranger, it’s like they’re shoving this crap in my face, and I don’t appreciate it. She’s going through a phase, that’s all. She’s getting something – Christ knows what – out of her system, and then he’ll be history. She obviously needs to do this, for some reason, but don’t think she’s in that relationship for the long haul. She isn’t. We’re unfinished business, and she might not want to hear that, but she knows it’s true. And there’s only so long she can fight that for.
“You’re one of life’s overthinkers.”
I turn around and smile at Tania as she grabs herself a mug from the cupboard and fills it with coffee. “You got that from me standing here, at the window?”
She takes a sip of coffee and checks her phone. “I can tell from your stance. Hands in pockets, shoulders slightly hunched, gaze fixed straight ahead. Or maybe you’re just a brooder.”
“Is there a difference?”
She shrugs and takes another sip of coffee. “Maybe. Have you seen my notebook? I was making some notes last night and I can’t remember where I left it.”
“It’s over there, on the dresser.”
I watch as she packs her bag and drinks her coffee and rushes around my kitchen like a beautiful whirlwind. It’s been four days since Megan and Xander “went public”, but it’s also been four days since Tania and I started whatever the hell this is supposed to be. But even if we can’t put a label on it, at least she understands that I can’t promise her anything other than company, and sex, nothing else, not right now. Maybe never. That all depends on Megan, and I’m not giving up on her just yet. Not yet.
“Would you like something to eat?” I ask Tania as she drains her mug and places it in the sink, shaking her head.
“I can’t. I’m going to be late for a meeting if I don’t leave now.”
“Can’t you spare a second?”
