“I can’t. I’m afraid of what will happen if I get too far from Markhel.” She could hear Preacher Jo and Markhel speaking outside.
“I’ll bring you some dinner.” Duncan gave her a tiny smile, then left the barn. At least he didn’t put up a fuss when it came to Markhel.
She scooted back and leaned against a stall door. She felt okay but could also feel a tiredness creeping into her bones. The day had been long, and it was hard to believe it was dinner time already. She hadn’t eaten since breakfast, and her stomach rumbled in protest.
When Markhel returned, she smiled at him. “What did you speak to Preacher Jo about? She hoped she wasn’t being nosy, but if they were going to be married... joined... together...
“You wish a human wedding?”
“My parents do.”
“But do you, little one?”
She thought a moment and pictured herself in a wedding dress. There was one at the mercantile. A dress made by the Weavers no less. It wasn’t the fanciest one she’d ever seen, but it was still very pretty. Would Pa purchase it for her?
“Yes. I want a wedding.”
He took her by the hand. “Then you shall have it. But it might have to be done quickly.”
She laughed. “If Pa had his way Preacher Jo would have us married before dessert.”
He smiled. “I wish he would. But you need some time, and I have heard that human females like to plan their weddings.”
“There’s no time for that. But I would like a dress.”
He drew closer. “You shall have one then.” He put his cheek next to hers and sighed in contentment.
“Why do you like this?”
“Do you not?”
“I do, but I’ve never seen people do what we were doing.”
“My heart likes it.”
She smiled and rubbed her cheek against his. “I think mine does too.” He moved his face, the tip of his nose brushing past hers, then pulled her into his arms and kissed her.
She melted against him and feeling bold, kissed him back. Okay, she was beginning to see why Pa was pushing them to wed as soon as possible. Her body shook with the power of Markhel’s kiss, and for some odd reason, she felt stronger.
When he broke the kiss, he held her close. “Maida...”
“Mm?”
“I do not know how to... propose.”
She snorted.
He pulled away and looked at her. “That is amusing?”
She put a hand to her mouth to stifle her laughter. “No, it’s just that... you sounded so serious.”
“Is it not a serious matter?” He sat a little straighter. “Josiah King said I needed to...”
“Preacher Jo,” she corrected, “and I know what he said. I guess it would be nice. But do you have a ring?”
“No. But I can send Kwaku for one.”
“Do Muiraran’s use rings when they... join?”
