I grinned, leaning against the stage as they pulled Tucker out by his feet. “And what makes you think this isn’t a friendly challenge? That I didn’t pick him because I knew my beast would keep him safe.”

“Might be because I saw it coming.” John shrugged. “Or it could’ve been the phone call I just overheard.”

I stilled, trying not to show interest. But John wasn’t like the other political Alphas I’d met who’d dangle a carrot over someone’s head.

“Seems Chad-boy called his daddy and let him know about the fight,” John said.

“Now why would he do that? It’s against the contract to talk about filming.” I was only teasing. We both knew the rules didn’t apply to shifters like the Tulias.

Then again, they didn’t much apply to us either. But we broke them when it was necessary, not because we thought we were gods.

“Don’t know why he’d risk it,” John’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “Or why he’d stay in the fight when daddy Alpha said he’d get the show to cancel it.”

“Wonder why that is?” I clicked my tongue, looking over to where Chad was walking up the red carpet toward the stage with Brett Frazier beside him.

“That one has a plan up his sleeve.” John cracked his neck from side to side. “Let me know if you need anything.”

He jumped up the stairs to throw open the cage door.

I smiled as I called after him, “I thought you wanted advice.”

“Nah. I’m good.” John shrugged, staying light on his feet as he raised his hands and keeping them relaxed in the air. Brett Frazier came charging into the ring. I watched as John expertly stepped to the side, letting Brett stumble forward with his own weight, and knew the younger Alpha was as good as dead.

“How can you sleep at a time like this?” Fallon nudged me as she leaned forward in her seat.

“Is Ranger fighting?” I jerked up straight and rubbed my eyes.

“Not yet,” she growled.

I squinted to see John O’Neil and Brett Frazier in the ring. This day was never going to end.

Why did I push him into this?

Seriously, we should have handled things old school and brawled in the middle of the parking lot. At this point, I wouldn’t mind just writing the Alpha of Tulia Pack a strongly worded letter. Anything to get out of this place. Colorado was gorgeous, but I wanted to hurry and get to McCaw Territory. I’d been daydreaming about it all morning and kept nodding off.

I still hadn’t decided if I wanted to run this mating season because for the first time in my adult life I was given a choice, but I did want to start applying for jobs and see about finding my papa a new doctor for his leg.

“Pay attention.” Fallon’s nails dug into my knee. All the waiting must have messed with her head because she was way too interested in the wrong fight.

I slowly peeled her claws from my skin. “Is there a reason I should be staring at John?”

“Don’t stare at him.” Her voice came out mixed with her wolf and she blinked in shock. “I mean, stare at him if you want. It’s fine. I just thought you’d want to see who wins this fight.”

“Nope.” I popped thep, stretching my back out as I stood. I needed to move around a bit to get my blood flowing again. We’d be sitting in a vehicle for hours tonight too.

But maybe Ranger and I can come up with some extracurricular activities to keep things interesting…

“He challenged Chad,” a female’s voice said from somewhere behind me.

It was low enough to not be directed at us. Fallon and I’d been basically shunned as one by one the other Lunas left the table after Ranger’s announcement. I’d honestly expected more backlash, but I’d take a cold shoulder over a cat-fight any day.

I turned to look for who was talking about my potential future mate.

Will you please accept the inevitable already?
