“Because of you?”

“Yeah.”

“Why is he famous because you?”

I took a long, deep breath. My heart was beating so hard it hurt the inside of my chest.

“Have you ever heard of a… wolf shifter?”

“I guess. I think my Bigfoot neighbor is married to one. They make a cute couple,” he said with a smile.

I stared at Cage confused. “I can’t tell if you being serious.”

“What do you mean, you can’t tell? Have you ever met a Bigfoot or a wolf shifter? They’re myths, aren’t they?”

“They used to be,” I said hesitantly.

Cage looked at me skeptically.

“What are you talking about?”

I took another deep breathe. This was it. I was going to do it.

“My father is really famous because he and my mother couldn’t have a baby. Being a geneticist, he thought he could figure out a way. And, he did. But there were side effects.”

“What kind of side effects?”

“Like I said, have you ever heard of a wolf shifter?”

Cage stared at me not knowing what to say… and then laughed.

“Okay, you had me going for a second there. How gullible am I?”

“Cage, I’m a wolf shifter.”

“No you’re not.”

“Why not?”

“Because there’s no such thing.”

“Do you have the internet?”

“On my phone. Why?”

“Type in my name.”

Cage looked at me confused. “Okaaaay,” he said hesitantly reaching for his phone. “What’s your last name?”

“Toro,” I said, my voice cracking. “Quin Toro.”

Cage’s confidence disappeared as he refocused on his screen and typed in my name. I didn’t have to see his phone to know the moment the search results appeared. He stared down stunned.

“Didn’t you ever hear about any of this?” I asked hoping I hadn’t lost him.

“I did, but you hear a lot of things living out here. I never believed any of it.”

“Well, this one happens to be true. Are you freaking out?”
