“Perhaps. But first you’re going to have tell me everything you know about this dragon you’re tracking.”

I stared at the creature sitting in front of me wondering if he could read my mind. I didn’t know what a Fae was. I didn’t know what they were capable of.

I couldn’t forget the way I felt when Cage’s father’s eyes turned black at the hospital. It felt like it was searching my thoughts like files in a cabinet. Could Dr. Tom do the same?

At the same time, there was no way I was going to betray Cage. Even if it meant having my mind wiped of all of this, I wasn’t doing that to him. I couldn’t put him in that type of danger.

“I was at the hospital visiting a friend and he pushed me into a room and threatened me. He told me he knew what I was and said he would kill me if he saw me again?”

“I see. Dragons are known to nest far away from others. Usually they’re only threatening when they’re protecting their property. Does any of that fit with what happened to you?”

It fit perfectly. But I couldn’t tell him that without revealing more about Cage.

“I don’t see how it can.”

“Huh,” he huffed staring me in the eyes.

“And you followed him here?”

“Not exactly. Cage, and I later found him when we were driving in the woods looking for him. He was dead or comatose or something”

“Cage is your friend out there?”

“Yeah. He was in dragon form but I could tell it was him from his smell. We decided to follow his trail to find out where he came from and it led us to the road leading into town. The trail suddenly stopped after that.”

“That’s the protective spell. It dampens the scent of anything within it.”

“Is that why my wolf can barely smell anything since we got here?”

“That would be why. Otherwise, who knows what would come looking for us after it caught our scent on the wind.”

“I see. And the wolf shifters here are okay with that?” I asked knowing how much dimmer life felt without my wolf’s enhanced ability.

“It’s better to lose your sense of smell than your life.”

“I guess,” I said wondering if this Fae knew how much his protective spell stole from a wolf.

“Believe me, if you knew what was out there, you would do the same.”

“Maybe. So, do I keep my memories?”

Dr. Tom evaluated me one last time. “For now. But, don’t make us come looking for you.”

“I won’t. But, do you think you might be able to introduce me to a wolf shifter? I mean, I’ve never met another one like me.”

Dr. Tom stared not saying a word. When he was done, he turned his attention to the files behind him.

“Have you had the chance to meet many people in town?”

“We’ve met a few. But I’m guessing you already know who they are.”

“Yes, well. There’s no one whose confidence I can break. But there are a few interesting characters in town. Nero is someone you might find entertaining. He’s a little rough around the edges but he’s a good kid.”

“Nero?”

“Yes. Is there anything else medical-related that I could help you with,” he said ushering me out.

“No. Thank you. Who do I pay for the visit?”
