“Dr. Tom,” Nero suggested.
“Do you think he’ll do it?” Quin asked.
“Dr. Tom and I are cool. If I asked him, he might,” Nero said.
“When?” Quin asked. “Because we’re heading back to school tonight.”
“Quin, I think we can stay over one more night if it means getting blood samples.”
Nero interrupted. “No. He might do it tonight.”
“Really? Then, give him a call,” I told him.
“Nah. If I called him, he would tell me to come by in the morning. I have a better idea,” Nero said retrieving his clothes and getting dressed.
When we all returned to our trucks, we caravanned out of the middle of nowhere back into town. Things took a while to look familiar. When they did, we were pulling up to the house we had visited the day before. In the back was Dr. Tom’s office. In the front was a beautiful two-story home that glowed.
“Someone’s still awake,” I told Quin. “Do you think this is a good idea?’
“Which part?”
“All of it. Any of it. Honestly, my mind is a swirling mess right now. I can’t decide.”
Quin slowed down and looked at me with caring eyes.
“How are you feeling by the way? This must be a lot to wrap you head around.”
“You know, as weird as it sounds, me getting mad and turning into a wolf? It feels like I always knew. I mean, I didn’t. But, meeting you… Finding out you were one… Finding out I’m one…? It feels all kinds of right.
“Now, the fact that Nero could be my brother and that my mother could be alive? I didn’t see that coming. That part’s a lot.”
“Do you want to keep going with this? We don’t have to do the test if you don’t want to,” he said reaching across the truck and putting his hand on mine.
“I want to. I really want to. What if I have a family, Quin? What would that even mean?”
“I don’t know. But there is only one way to find out,” he said squeezing my hand.
I could have kept staring into his eyes forever if Dr. Tom and Glen didn’t exit onto the porch wearing robes.
“Nero, Titus, is that you?” Dr. Tom asked as we approached. “What’s going on?”
They didn’t reply. When Dr. Tom saw us, they didn’t have to.
“I see you found Nero,” he said to Quin stoically.
“I did. But not before Cage shifted into a wolf and the two of them tried to kill each other,” Quin told him.
“Huh. And, what are you doing here?”
“We need a blood test to see if they’re brothers,” Quin explained.
“I see,” he said casually. “Come back in the morning.”
“Did you know that I could have a brother?” Nero asked Dr. Tom.
He didn’t answer.
“You did,” Nero said shocked. “After all of those things I told you were going on, you couldn’t tell me that my mom might not be crazy?”
