Wait, was Nero a wolf shifter as well? Was that why he was such a great football player?

“A workout for the Cougars,” I told him with my head spinning.

“What’s he saying?” Cali asked.

“He says he hasn’t touched a football since our last game two years ago.”

“What you don’t practice, you lose,” Cage pointed out. “Believe me, I know.”

Wait, was Cage one, too? If Nero was a wolf, and Cage is his brother, wouldn’t that mean he had to be? How many supernatural people played football? Oh my god, were there already wolf shifters on our team?

Not sure if any of what I was thinking was true, I decided to act like I didn’t know anything. Claude had entrusted me with his secrets and who knew how much they all knew about each other.

“With all due respect, Cage, Claude’s, um, ability,” I said, no longer sure how to phrase it, “might be different than yours. He’s really special.” I turned to Nero. “You said he played receiver in high school, right? Because that’s what he told me too. But he was such an amazing quarterback, there were times when I thought he was lying.

“If he could take a position he’s never played in his life and play at that level, I don’t think a two year break will make that much of a difference,” I concluded without suggesting that I knew more than I should have about anything.

“Cage, I’ve got to see this,” Nero repeated.

“So do I,” Cage agreed.

“How do we make this happen?” Nero questioned the group.

After a second of thought, I said, “Could you arrange a scrimmage? I bet if you got him on a field, everything would come right back to him,” I told them thinking it might also help him remember the love he had for football… and me.

“I could probably do that,” Cage declared. “Would you be available to play?” He asked Cali.

“Yeah, sure”.

“So that’s me, Nero, Cali. We could probably get Titus involved.”

“You could ask a few of your players,” Nero suggested.

“Your players?” I asked Cage.

“I coach the high school team. I coached Cali,” Cage said with a smile.

“Oh. Cool,” I said suddenly seeing them as a wolf pack with Cage as their very hot alpha.

“Yeah. I’m sure a few of the players would be up for this. They’ve been asking me for weeks when Nero was gonna come talk to them.”

“Well, now they have an assistant coach with the Cougars,” Nero said gesturing to me with a smile.

“I don’t know why they would want to hear from me. But if they did, I would, of course, be happy to say a few words.”

“Then it’s settled,” Cage said. “Tomorrow Claude is going to join us for a pick-up game.”

“If I know Claude, he’s not gonna go for that,” Cali responded. “But apparently, I don’t know Claude at all. So what do I know?”

“I don’t get it,” I said, still very confused. “Didn’t he talk about football at all when he came home for breaks?”

“They didn’t know they were brothers until a few months ago,” Cage explained.

“Yeah, that seems to be a thing in our town,” Nero added.

“Ahhh! That makes more sense,” I said feeling better about Claude not telling me.

“I think you’re right, Cali,” Nero agreed. “Unless someone compels him, he’s not gonna come if we tell him why he’s coming.”
