I froze. “Wait, you think Dr. Tom’s protection spell has something to do with why the wolves in this town never formed a pack?”

Cage tightened his lips and looked at Quin.

“No, you don’t think it. Your genius boyfriend does,” I realized.

“I’ve asked Dr. Tom about it,” Quin said. “It’s a spell to keep everyone safe. And if you’re scared of wolves, why wouldn’t it include the threat of wolves working as a pack?”

“Fuck!” I spit realizing all of my darkest thoughts about Dr. Tom might be true. “He was also the one who knew that Cage was alive and kept it from Mama. He’s been manipulating us this whole time.”

“We don’t know that,” Quin corrected.

“We know he knew about Cage,” I pointed out.

“He did. But we don’t know if the spell was designed to keep the wolves apart. It’s just a possibility,” Quin said.

“And, whether or not it’s true, the solution is for the wolves in town to gather for a run, and for the faes and humans to not feel like their lives are in danger when they do,” Cage explained.

I couldn’t argue against that. Cage was right. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if Cage was our alpha. And maybe they weren’t moving to a house under the protective spell to push me away.

Considering that, my thoughts turned to Kendall. I pulled out my phone to check my texts.

“Looking for a message from Kendall?” Cage asked changing the topic.

I didn’t answer. And not finding one, I stuffed my phone back into my pocket.

After a moment of silence, Cage spoke again. This time with more empathy.

“He’ll text. I saw the way he was looking at you after the game. He’s into you, too.”

“Drop it, Cage!”

Despite my reaction, I appreciated what he said. Every time Kendall took an extended time to reply, I wondered if things between us were over. He had already told me to go to hell once. Should I expect him to do it again?

Cage and Quin had been right. I had to figure out the thing he had against football players. He was helping me deal with my shit. As a football player, maybe there was something I could do to help him.

Not returning to Dr. Sonya’s with the others, I headed home and waited for Cage to deliver Quin. Driving back, Quin and I talked about Kendall. He suggested that we invite him to our next game night before a run. He thought it would be the perfect opportunity to tell him I was a wolf shifter.

It wasn’t a bad idea. But I felt like I needed alone time with him before we did it.

‘When are we doing our next session?’ I texted him when he didn’t reply to what I thought was a funny meme.

‘If you want, we can talk over lunch tomorrow.’

‘What about over dinner at Commons?’ I asked referring to the cafeteria connected to the popular study space. It was a little more intimate.

After our rapid-fire exchange, Kendall didn’t respond for an hour. When he did, he wrote, ‘Sure. What time?’

My wolf couldn’t have been happier. Thanks to it, seeing him was all I could think about for the rest of the night.

Going extra hard in practice to burn off my excess energy, I was exhausted by the time dinner rolled around. I could barely lift my arms.

“What’s up with you?” Kendall asked me after looking me up and down.

“Hard practice.”

“Oh. So, what have you been up to?”

I wanted to say that he would have known if he had replied to my text, but I didn’t.
