His eyes bounced toward me. It was like he sensed something.

“I have someone I want you to take a look at.”

“Is he not feeling well?” He asked in a Spanish accent.

“He feels fine. It’s about what he is?”

The doctor’s eyes snapped toward Nero.

“What is he?”

“I don’t know. Something? Nothing? All I know is that I can’t smell him. None of the wolves can. It’s like he doesn’t exist.”

The brown-skinned man stepped toward me and stopped an arm’s length away. He wasn’t much taller than me but he felt as intimidating as a giant. With his eyes staring into mine, I felt the impulse to look away. It was like he was searching my soul. It wasn’t until he looked away that air return to my lungs.

“You should bring him by my office,” he told Nero.

“How about right now?” Nero said with bite.

I wasn’t sure what was going on between the two. Nero was asking for a favor like he was owed it. And Dr. Tom was staring at him stone-faced and unimpressed. Neither man backed down until the doctor relented.

“Meet me there,” he told Nero. “I’ll head over once I’m done here.”

“And how long will that be?” Nero growled.

“When I’m done,” he replied growling back.

Nero stared at the doctor a little longer then turned and led me away.

“What was that about?” I asked having to jog to catch up with him.

“That’s the asshole who knew my brother was alive and didn’t tell me.”

My mouth dropped open. Speechless, I looked back at the man who had stolen so much from Nero. He seemed unaffected by their exchange. Were all Fae as unfeeling as him?

We continued to cross the field when Nero spotted Cage. He was with someone I recognized from getting pizza after the football game. I wondered where Quin was. Scanning the area, I didn’t see him.

“Nero, you good?” Cage asked as soon as we were close enough to speak. “I could smell your anger from across the field.”

“You could smell him?” The other guy asked Cage.

“Yeah. Couldn’t you?”

The guy looked at Nero who was standing in front of him.

“I mean, he smells a little different than usual. You can really smell that he’s angry?”

“Cage can do a lot of things the rest of us can’t do,” Nero said staring at his brother. “Like getting every wolf in town to agree to come to this bullshit.”

“The wolves see the benefit. Titus could have organized this if he had tried,” Cage replied referring to the shaggy haired guy next to him.

“As much I would like to think that’s the case,” Titus said, “It’s not. People listen to you. I’m not sure I could have refused to come if I tried,” he said with a chuckle.

“It’s not as big of a deal as you’re making it out to be,” Cage countered.

“That’s because you don’t feel it,” Titus explained. “The desire to listen to you is strong, Cage.”

“Tell Quin that,” Cage joked. “I can’t even get my boyfriend to spend time with me.”
