“You have a great power around you,” she repeated. “It is what I see.”

“But, do you know if I’m fae? Were my parents?”

“I’ve told you all I know,” she said leaning back.

Assuming it was the end of my reading, I slowly stood.

“Okay. What do I owe you for the reading?”

“No charge. It was a message I was meant to give you. Now that I’ve delivered it, I can go home.”

“Oh. Okay. Thank you… Have a good day.”

She nodded and got up collecting her things.

When the three of us were far enough away that the woman couldn’t hear us, Nero leaned over.

“She was my third grade teacher.”

“Was she?”

“Yeah. And do see why I don’t like getting my fortune read?”

I stared at him confused.

“No. Why?”

“Kendall, she didn’t tell you anything. It was the same thing with Dr. Tom. No one tells you anything. Then they want all of this thanks for doing nothing and maybe making things worse.”

I was about to point out what she said about seeing my parents again and that I had great power, but I didn’t. His opinion felt like it had more to do with his history with Dr. Tom than what the doctor and palm reader had said.

“So, if one day I get access to my great power and I offer to read your future?”

“I’ll say that you don’t have to tell me all of the things I’m going to do to you when we’re alone. Because I already know.”

I looked over at his mother embarrassed.

“Nero!”

“What? I didn’t say what those things were. I’m just said that there are things. And there will be a lot of them.”

Nero was saying it with a smile but I was sure I was turning beet red. My face felt hot enough to fry an egg. I swatted at his shoulder and he laughed. Intertwining my arm with his, I pulled him tight and faced ahead ignoring him.

“Do you think there’s alcohol in those muffins?” Nero’s mother asked referring to a booth ahead of us.

“Only one way to find out,” Nero joked before leading us there.

Purchasing a few of the muffins, we ate them and found Cage and Quin. Quin was walking around in her mascot costume posing for pictures with people while Cage attentively kept watch.

“It’s quite the turnout,” Cage said scanning the area. “Dr. Sonya should be pleased.”

“Titus should be, too. He’s all about these types of things,” Nero said.

I turned to Quin. “You alright in there?”

“We didn’t make armholes, or a hole to breathe through!”

“Oh yeah,” I realized with a laugh. “Sorry, it was my first moonshine jug costume.”
