“Chris, whatever you are referring to, I officially don’t care.”
“You sure about that? Because it seems that you have finally done something right.”
Lou stopped at the bottom of the stairs and stared at him. “What?”
“Oh yeah. Frank and Martha are very impressed.”
Seeing Lou being lured back in, I slipped my hand around his upper arm. “Let’s just go, Lou. Don’t listen to him.”
“Louis definitely wants to see this. And again, very impressive,” he said sincerely.
“I should just see what he’s talking about,” Lou said turning to me. “We’ll leave right afterward. I promise.”
“Lou, you don’t want to do this,” I told him getting a whiff of a new scent in the house I couldn’t identify. I didn’t like it.
“Oh, he does,” Chris told me. He turned to Lou. “Trust me,” he said with a disturbing smile.
“I’m just going to see,” Lou said to me. “What is it, Chris?”
“Follow me.”
We did and as we entered the living room, we found Lou’s parents having drinks with someone I didn’t recognize. He was our age, good-looking, and wearing an expensive suit.
“Sey?” Lou asked stunned. “What are you doing here?”
“Wait. This is…?” I stopped myself.
“His fiancé. Yeah,” Sey confirmed with a cocky smile. “Lou, I didn’t think I was going to be able to make it, but I just felt compelled to come. I had to be here by your side. So I decided to drive up and surprise you.”
Lou stared at him speechless.
Chris continued. “At first that confused us because you had introduced him as your fiancé,” he said gesturing to me. “But then Seymour mentioned that he had met Frank and Martha before and reminded them of his proposal. Turns out he is your real fiancé and this one isn’t,” he said glaring at me.
Lou looked at everyone flustered. I tried to think of what I could say to explain everything but I couldn’t come up with anything either.
“Here’s the funny thing,” Chris continued. “We like him. Quarterback of the football team, comes from a notable family, and has great taste in cars. Louis, you finally did something right. Well done.”
I looked at Sey again. His smug smile couldn’t have been bigger. Where had he been until now? Why hadn’t he told Lou about his plans? What made him think he could just show up and everything would be fine?
He was clearly the biggest asshole in the universe. There was no way I was going to let him do whatever it was he was trying to do to Lou.
“Listen, Sey…”
Lou’s mother cut me off.
“Louis, we don’t like him,” she said pointing at me. “But luckily Seymour showed up and we do like him. Send the one we don’t like home and we can talk about your future in this family.”
“My future?”
“What are you, in your third year at that school? Your grandmother was funding your tuition and now she’s gone. I suspect you’re going to want to complete your stay there.”
“Are you blackmailing your son?” I asked having had enough. “You’re just awful, aren’t you? All of you are? You think you can just use your money to bully Lou around? You can’t. Not anymore. He’s finally free of you.”
Lou put his hand on my forearm silencing me. “Titus, can we talk?”
My heart stopped hearing his words. What was happening?
“Come,” he said leading me into the other room.
