Cali stared at Sey as he went through his drills. He turned back to me.
“I mean, I can hate him if you want me to. Fuck Sey.”
“Thank you,” I said sincerely. “But seriously, you don’t get a weird feeling from him?”
“He seems like he’s trying really hard to get people to like him.”
“That’s what I mean. Doesn’t it seem fake to you?”
“Maybe. But he’s an openly gay quarterback. I’m sure he feels the pressure of it,” Cali said making a good point.
“I guess,” I said not sure if that was it.
I had watched what Nero went through after coming out. The team had been nothing but supportive. So was the media. The only ones who weren’t were players from the other teams. And that had more to do with Nero kicking their ass on the field.
You try to get in the head of your opponent any way you can. With Nero, it was that he liked guys.
With Sey, it felt like there was something else going on. Sure, we didn’t get along. And that was explainable. But the feeling went beyond that.
I had to assume he was treating Lou well. I couldn’t imagine Lou putting up with anything less. So maybe it was just in my head. Maybe Sey didn’t deserve me picturing his face on every quarterback I played against. But…
“So Lou’s visiting Shifter Falls this weekend? What are you gonna do with him?”
I looked at Cali. He had used the wolf shifters’ nickname for our hometown. In truth, the place didn’t have a name. It was always just referred to as home. But now that we were incorporating it, we were going to have to come up with something official. It was yet another thing I had to think of.
“What do you mean?” I asked suddenly feeling my shoulder throb.
“Are you gonna show him around?”
“Should I?”
“You two are trying to be friends, right?”
“Are we?”
“Aren’t you?”
Were we? It seemed like Lou was, but what was I doing.
“What about you, Cali? You found someone to replace Quin, yet?”
Cali blushed.
“Have you?” I asked surprised. “Is it someone on the team?”
I watched him react.
“It is!” I confirmed.
I looked around the field again.
“Please tell me it’s not Sey.”
“Ah, no,” he said half-heartedly.
“Jesus, Cali.”
“He’s the only guy on the team who’s into guys!”
