Page 27 of Fall onto me

I walk up the stairs, hoping that he’ll be able to give me a description later, but right now we have to get ready.

Kate and Ryder’s voices are distant now, but I keep my door open to listen. “I don’t care that you hooked up with other girls, Ryder. It was before me.”

“She didn’t matter,” he assures her.

“I know, but I don’t want to hear about it.” She sighs. “It hurts to hear.”

“I’m sorry, baby.”

I need to follow his lead and ask my girl for forgiveness.

* * *

It’sSkyler’s first time in her new dorm, she’s been holed up inside since our fight. Apparently, she skipped classes today from what Kate told me before I came. She said, ‘Skyler is being emo, so I left her with a tub of ice cream before I came here.’

I loathe the fact that I’ve made her feel this way, which is why I’ve brought surprises. I knock on her door. “Who is it?” she croaks, meaning she hasn’t really spoken today much.

“Me,” I reply, hoping she’ll come to the door.

“Go commit more crimes, Clyde.”

I roll my eyes at her joke, “Do you want to be Bonnie?”

“No, they were terrible people who are glorified now. Go! Away!”

I didn’t want to use this, but she’s left me with no choice. I pull out the key that Kate gave me, trying not to drop her gifts on the ugly hall carpet.

She’s surprised, wide eyed, and angry when I walk in. Lying on her little bed, that has only a small blanket, white walls, and is vastly different from Kate’s. “Baby, your side of the room is so …”

“Shitty? I know. Haven’t had time to do anything, since my boyfriend is one more crime away from prison.” She frowns, then knocks on wood. Her eyes float to the flowers in my hand and she wags her finger.

“Don’t need your flowers.”

“How about this?” I sit on the edge of her bed, handing over the steaming hot latte I ordered her.

She tilts her head and grabs it with a quick tug. “I don’t want it to go to waste.”

A chuckle escapes me, even though I try to stop it. “We don’t want these to go to waste either.” I scoot the flowers towards her, and she plucks a pedal off of the biggest rose.

“Okay, killer.” I pull the flowers away before she can mangle them further. “I’m sorry, I didn’t see the point of you worrying yourself to death when it’s the same result whether you know or not.”

“I don’t want to know, Foster. But I have to, do you understand that?”

I raise my hands in defeat. She’s right. “I know, and I’m sorry. Can you forgive me?”

One thing about her is she’s living for herself now, how it should be. So, she may decide I’m not worth the trouble, but I know her heart, and it forgives.

She tries not to break her frown but fails with a little tilt of her lips. “Life is too short. We’re in this together.”

“No more lies, okay?”

“None.” I grin, thankful. “Well, I didn’t mention something that happened the other day.”

She stills. “What?”

“I saw Envy.”

“Did she talk to you?”
