“Good girl,” she chuckles, “now take one of the burner phones and turn it on. Leave yours in your room.”
“Axle won’t stop following me,” I whisper.
“I think he’s your dog now. Sin is jealous.”
A small laugh escapes me, bitter knowing I’ll probably never see this sweet dog again. “Going outside, I’ll respond in a minute.” I lean down to give him a hug and a kiss on top of his head before slipping out onto my balcony for the second time tonight.
I blow Axle a kiss through the window, thanking my lucky stars that he doesn’t bark.
Slipping into the darkness isn’t hard, as I don’t expect Max to be ready to catch me now. He doesn’t think I would ever leave in the night like this. Everyone is wrong about me, and if I’m never around Sin again there isn’t a need for bodyguards in the first place. “Thank you so much,” I tell her, gripping my hands on the balcony railing.
“No worries, that’s what friends are for. I’ll be back tomorrow, and we can meet up to figure out what’s going on.”
“I’m sorry, Bria, I didn’t know what to do, but I can’t stay here.” I keep my voice low, just in case anyone is on the grounds below me.
“Don’t apologize to me, just be careful.”
I hang up, inhaling a crisp breath of air, readying myself. I’m more careful this time, placing each foot on the lattice to test it before allowing it to bear my weight.
A pang of hurt spreads through my chest. This unbelievable opportunity that I still don’t fully understand is in myhands, I’m literally holding the lattice that hugs this wall, this gorgeous home in the city. A safe haven.
My feet gingerly touch the ground and I take one last look up the dark brick.
And then I run from it.
TWENTY-TWO
Using the burner, I searched for a five-star hotel and found one a block away from Sin’s home.
I didn’t go to that one.
Instead, I walked four angry miles through the pulsing city streets, ignoring Bria’s requested one closer to home, but I just needed to decide something for myself tonight.
Now, I’m lying in quite possibly the softest bed in existence mulling over what to order from the room service menu.
Caviar, lobster, steak.
I haven’t had dinner.
I was treated like royalty the moment I walked inside with that little black card. They placed me in a penthouse suite, not that I would ever need that much room, but with a card that has no limit… why not?
The bill won’t be posted until I leave, so if Sin has access to the account he won’t know until I’m long gone.
Where I’ll go, I do not know.
With a quick call down, I order every little thing my hungry, sad heart desires.
Typically, I wouldn’t do this, but I do know that this is my last night of luxury and Sin can pay for hurting my heart the way he did.
As for now, I will stay in this penthouse that overlooks the sparkling city and pretend that I’m a woman who has her shit together, that afforded this gorgeous place and all of its luxuries.
I slip on the silk robe from the bathroom and rub the expensive lotion into my skin, relishing in its citrusy scent.
A knock sounds, startling me. I place my palms on the door and look through the peephole, calming at the sight of room service. I open up the door, mouth-watering as they wheel in a tray.
"Your dinner is ready, Ms. Finley." The mention of my name surprises me until I recall that they needed my ID during check-in.
I move out of their way. “Thank you so much.”
