Hopefully he hadn’t noticed her falling apart either.
She blew out a breath and found a smile for London. “I’m fine.”
“You look exhausted.” London touched her arm. “And at the scene?—”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Boo said, holding up her hand. “I’m fine. Everything’s fine.”
London raised an eyebrow, then nodded. “I’ll get you some hot cocoa.”
She smiled then, something thin. “Okay, yes. That might help.” Put a chocolate Band-Aid over the gaping hole in her chest, ease the pain a little. Maybe forget that she’d unraveled with relief when Oaken came to shore.
This was why she didn’t date teammates.
Or even date at all.
She shook her head and turned back to the window. It was just trauma. And emotion. It didn’t mean she was repeating the past.
“Hey, there you are.”
She looked over, and Moose came out of the ER hallway. “Oaken is nearly stitched up. I’m headed back to the Tooth with the rig. Ashley is being admitted for trauma and sexual assault, but she’s talking to the police. You talk with the cops?”
“Yep. Gave my statement. Where are Axel and Shep?” She’d followed the ambulance in Oaken’s car, leaving Moose and the team to deal with the second victim, the possible kidnapper.
“We came back together. They’re in the truck. No-go on the driver. We found the van, but it was empty.”
She nodded, not sure how to feel.
“You sure you’re okay to drive?”
“I’m fine.”
He frowned. “What about?—”
“Nope. Just . . . adrenaline, okay? I’m fine.”
His mouth made a tight, grim line, but he nodded. “Okay, then. We’ll talk about it later.”
“Or never.”
He narrowed his eyes. “In case you’re confused, I don’t want to see you in the office tomorrow.”
She cocked her head at him.
“Really. It’s Saturday. Take a walk. Decompress.” He glanced back at the ER. “Maybe take Oaken with you.”
“You’re not helping.”
He grinned. “Or am I?”
She shook her head, inhaling.
“Okay, don’t get your jumpsuit in a knot. Just... good job out there.”
“Oaken was nearly killed.”
“But he wasn’t killed. And people were saved. I think there’s a place on this team for Oaken, if he wants it.”
“He has a life. And a career. And none of it includes Alaska.”
