“I saw the boat float on the chain.”
“Oh, right. Yeah. Not a boat—a fish house. It’s her dad’s. He keeps it up at Lilly Lake, in the boatyard. At least in the summer. It’s probably on the ice now.” She lifted a shoulder. “Why? Did you find them?”
“No.” He rapped his knuckles on the counter. “Thanks, Quinn.” A smile.
She smiled back.
“So?” Conrad said when he got back in the car.
“Dunno. Just a gut feeling.” He stared out the window as Conrad pulled out, toward the Moonlight Supperclub.
“Like when you know a fast break is coming and you can’t stop it?”
Jack laughed. “Something like that.”
“Does it have anything to do with Penelope?”
“I don’t know. Maybe.” He looked at Conrad. “Okay, here goes. Penelope is getting ready to name her suspect in the Sarah Livingston cold case. I think she got a call from Kyle Brunley?—”
“The dead guy at the Duck Lake Motor Lodge.”
“Yep. Sarah’s platonic friend who might not have been platonic.” Jack’s brain landed on Harper for a moment, then he shook it away. “I think Kyle knew something about the crime. Maybe even something about Tommy or Zorro?—”
“Zorro?”
“The masked man who was seen leaving Sarah’s apartment the night of the murder.”
“Zorro. Got it.”
Jack missed Harper. Really, he should be talking this out withher.
“So, Penelope meets Kyle at Echoes on Tuesday, then heads out to the Inn and gets settled in before everyone else arrives,” Jack said. He pulled his phone from the manila envelope. No missed calls from Harper. “Meanwhile, Kyle drives out to the Motor Lodge.”
“Where he’s murdered.”
“Right. Maybe before Penelope is picked up. My thought is whoever murdered him called Ty for a ride. But why? Why not drive his own car?”
Conrad’s eyes widened, and yes, an answer clicked in. “Maybe the torched Taurus?—”
“Belonged to the killer.” Jack pointed at him. “All rentals have GPS built into them. Which could put our murderer at the scene of the crime. Instead, he parks at the market, takes an Uber to the Motor Lodge, kills Kyle, gets back in, and rides to the supper club.”
“And waits?” Conrad said.
“He gets lucky. Penelope calls Ty again. Or maybe not lucky—smart—because Penelope was in Echoes the same time Job and Elton were, the same time the man with the suit was.”
“The man with thesuit?”
“Just stay with me,” Jack said. “He watched Penelope and Kyle, watched her get picked up by Ty. He might have grabbed the man’s card. And who knows what they talked about in the Uber ride out to the Motor Lodge? Maybe Ty had already gotten the call to pick up Penelope. . .”
“And he saw opportunity. But what is the motive?”
Jack sighed. “The podcast.”Wait.“What if this wasn’t about Zorro but Tommy? What if Kyle had something onhim?”
“Tommy?”
“The ex-con neighbor. With an assault record.”
“Anassaultrecord?” Conrad turned into to the supper club. Jack spotted Harper’s Chevy Sonic in the drive.
