Do I even want her to know what we are?

The answer to that last question is a resounding no.

Isabella needs to stay far, far away from the paranormal world. For her own safety.

And if I have to be the bad guy to ensure that happens, then so be it.

Maybe this is why the universe gave her to me as a mate—because I’m the only one heartless enough to do what needs to be done.

The ache in my chest spreads, turning unbearable, and I place my fist over my heart.

Yes, I’ll cut her loose, make her hate us…

Even if it kills me in the process.

Fifty-Four

IZZY

Fifty-seven texts later, and still no response from Grayson or the others.

I walk through the school hallway in a daze, my mind adrift, my gaze sightless.

Where are they?

Why aren’t they returning my texts?

Why won’t Hale and Gerry tell me what happened to Grayson last night?

Happy fucking birthday to me.

Only Jake has been semi-normal, waking me up by jumping on my bed and thrusting a “birthday pancake” into my hands. Well, it was actually just a chocolate chip pancake on a plate with a candle in it, but it’s the thought that counts.

I’ve never had anyone sing me “Happy Birthday” before.

Not like Jake did.

Still, even my foster brother’s earlier exuberance hasn’t been able to dispel my rapidly sinking mood. I’m desperate to set eyes on Emery, Ethan, Reid, or even Ashton and demand answers. They know more than they’re letting on, and I’m sick of being left in the dark.

“So a little birdy told me it’s your birthday today!” Desiree materializes before me with a bright smile on her face.

I try to match her enthusiasm, but I just don’t have the energy.

Desiree, unperturbed by my feeble smile, balances a polka-dot party hat on my head. It tilts precariously to the side but doesn’t fall off.

“Happy eighteenth birthday,” Desiree singsongs as she links her arm with mine and begins to lead us down the hall.

In the distance, I can see Mimi, Emilia, KD, and Ashlinn waiting in front of my locker. Behind them is what appears to be a huge banner with the words HAPPY BIRTHDAY written across it.

My cheeks flush, and I dig my heels in.

“Oh no. Fuck that.” I try to get Desiree to stop, but she’s unnaturally strong for a girl her size.

She laughs evilly and forces me forward. “You don’t get to hide on your birthday. This is the one day a year your friends are allowed to embarrass the shit out of you.”

“Shouldn’t a person’s birthday be the one day free of any embarrassment?” I dig my heels in again.

“Hmmm.” Desiree taps her chin with a manicured finger. “Let me think about it for a second.” She pretends to ponder. “Yeah. No. I don’t think so.” She quickens her pace, practically bouncing with excitement, forcing me to jog in order to keep up. “We have to do something tonight to celebrate your birthday. We can have your actual birthday party on Friday, but we should do something small tonight. Just us girls. No dicks allowed.” She waggles a finger in front of my face. “Not even your harem. Ohhh. Maybe we could go ice skating! I’ve always wanted to go but?—”
