Another step. Her jaw tightened. I would be lying if I said the pace of my heart hadn’t accelerated several beats.

“You shouldn’t have come here.”

“If I hadn’t, you wouldhave died in there.”

As I closed the gap between me and her weapon, titanium pushed against my chest.

“Why would you care?”

I shook my head and chuckled. “Because you’ve lived inside my head the moment I set eyes on you. And I can’t shake you, preziosa. Every second of every fucking day, I think of you. So even if you kill me, at least I’ll die knowing you’re safe.”

Her chest heaved up and down, shallow breaths the only noise between us as our eyes locked.

“You’re insane,” she breathed.

“I am. But I knew that the moment I refused to sign over Illusion and decided to stay…because of you.”

A flicker of emotion moved through her features, thinning her irises.

I slowly lifted a hand, intent on sliding the gun from hers, when she suddenly whipped out of my grasp and fired four rounds into Tarasov’s face.

“I am, too. Remember that if you’re thinking of fucking me over.”

Stepping on the dead bastard, she briefly climbed back into the tattered car and rustled around for several seconds before emerging with a black bag slung over her shoulder. As she walked past me, she sent another round into the driver without missing a beat.

Dannazione.Goddamn.

My cock hardened.

“We should probably vacate this garage. The whole thing might come down when the car blows.”

“Oh, fuck,” I said, jogging after her with a grin stretching across my face.

Penso di essere innamorato. I think I’m in love.

“Whoare you?”

I glanced at her still figure in my passenger seat. She sat silently, eyes glued to the window, as if watching the city roll by, though we both knew she wasn’t sightseeing.

Amara was lost in her head, probably still debating whether she should put a bullet through my temple. Maybe I was desensitized to violence and death, or I had essentially lost my damn mind. Because seeing her tonight, covered in blood and handling business, awakened something primal within me. Never one to believe in fate, but I would have never imagined coming across anyone as perfect as this woman sitting beside me—even if, moments ago, she had her finger on the trigger and my chest in her sights.

I leaned my elbow against the door and bit down on my fist to hide the smile splitting my face in an effort not to provoke her any further.

For now.

“You know who I am,” she finally said, still searing a hole throughthe window.

“I know who I thought you were, but what happened back there—”

“Nothinghappened back there.”

“Right. But between us, I feel like that conversation needs to be had.”

She shifted toward me. “You mean the one where you’re stalking me? Watching me? Following me.Thatconversation?”

The car rolled to a stop at a red light, and I met her fiery gaze. “It’s my job to look after my dancers.”
