Page 36 of A Love Bite

Instinctively, I position myself between Alex and the attacker, my senses heightening. I know I have to protect her, but I can’t reveal my true nature here. I need to rely on my strength and training to handle this.

“Alex, run,” I whisper urgently, never taking my eyes off the man.

But she stands her ground, her face set with determination. “No, Jake. We’re in this together.”

The man lunges at us again, and this time I’m ready. I dodge his first swing and deliver a quick punch to his midsection, making him stagger back. He’s strong, but so am I.

“Stay out of our way!” he snarls, regaining his balance and coming at me again.

I manage to block his attacks, but I can tell he’s not going to back down easily. I need to end this quickly, for both our sakes. With a surge of adrenaline, I grab his arm and twist it behind his back, using his momentum against him. He cries out in pain, and I push him away, creating some distance between us.

“Go back to whoever sent you and tell them we’re not backing down,” I say, my voice low and dangerous.

But he throws me down, and his eyes flash amber.

If he turns into a werewolf in front of Alex…

Alex

As Jakeand the man continue to fight, the struggle intensifies. Their movements are quick and powerful, each blow resonating with force. The confrontation spills over into a narrow alleyway, and I follow, my heart pounding with fear and adrenaline. I can’t just leave Jake, but I’m terrified of what might happen next.

Suddenly, something incredible and horrifying happens. The man steps back, his body convulsing, and before my eyes, he begins to transform. His features distort, bones shifting and muscles expanding until he is no longer a man but a massive, snarling wolf.

I gasp, stumbling back, my mind struggling to comprehend what I’m seeing. This can’t be real. Wolves don’t just appear out of nowhere, especially not men turning into wolves.

“Jake!” I scream, my voice filled with panic.

To my utter shock, Jake begins to change too. His body contorts, and within moments, he stands before me, not as the man I know but as a formidable wolf, his eyes still unmistakably his. The realization hits me like a freight train.

Jake is a werewolf.

The two wolves circle each other, growling and snapping. The alley feels too small for such a fierce battle, and the sounds of their fight echo off the walls, amplifying my fear. I press myself against the brick wall, trying to stay out of their way, my entire body trembling.

Jake lunges at the other wolf, their bodies colliding with a force that shakes the ground. They tumble and wrestle, biting and clawing at each other. I watch in horror, feeling utterly helpless. My heart races, and I struggle to find my breath.

Just when it seems like Jake might be gaining the upper hand, the other wolf snarls and pushes him back, breaking free and retreating a few steps. The air is thick with tension, and I can see the determination in Jake’s eyes, even in his wolf form.

The other wolf glances at me, a predatory gleam in its eyes, but Jake positions himself protectively between us. The message is clear. Jake will do whatever it takes to protect me.

Jake and the man-turned-wolf face off, and I hate how hopeless I feel. The air is thick with the smell of adrenaline and fear, and I can hear the low growls emanating from both wolves, their eyes locked in a deadly stare.

Suddenly, the other wolf lunges at Jake, its jaws snapping inches from his neck. Jake sidesteps, narrowly avoiding the attack, and counters with a swift swipe of his paw, claws extended. The sound of ripping fur and flesh is sickening, and the other wolf yelps in pain but quickly recovers, circling Jake with renewed ferocity.

I frantically look around for my gun, hoping it might have fallen somewhere nearby, but it’s nowhere to be found. Panic wells up inside me, and I feel utterly helpless. My mind races with fear for Jake’s safety and a new, unsettling fear of him. He’s a werewolf—something out of myths and nightmares—and I don’t know what that means for us.

The wolves clash again, their bodies colliding with bone-jarring force. They tumble to the ground, a blur of fur and claws, each trying to gain the upper hand. The alleyway is filled with the sounds of their struggle—snarls, growls, and the sickening crunch of bones. I watch in horror as they bite and claw at each other, each wound they inflict driving them to fight harder.

Jake manages to throw the other wolf off him, sending it crashing into a pile of trash cans. The noise is deafening, but it gives Jake a moment to stand and catch his breath. The other wolf quickly regains its footing, blood dripping from a gash on its shoulder, and lunges at Jake again.

In a desperate bid to protect himself, Jake meets the attack head-on. They rear up on their hind legs, their powerful jaws snapping and slashing. Blood and saliva fly through the air, and the ferocity of the fight leaves me paralyzed with fear. I can see the determination in Jake’s eyes—he’s fighting not just for himself but for me as well.

The other wolf lunges, aiming for Jake’s throat, but Jake twists at the last moment, avoiding the deadly bite and countering with a powerful strike to the wolf’s side. The other wolf yelps in pain, but it’s not enough to stop it. They continue to battle, their movements a terrifying dance of violence and survival.

I crouch down, my heart pounding in my chest, and continue searching for my gun. My hands tremble as I sift through the debris on the ground, but it’s no use. The gun is gone, and I’m left with nothing but my mounting fear.
