My excited deflated as quickly as it bubbled up. “Oh, okay. I understand.”
“You're overqualified to be copywriter. With your experience, you're ready to step up into a more advanced role. If you're interested, I’d like to offer you a position that recently opened up for an associate advertising executive.”
My mouth dropped. “Seriously.”
“Yes. I understand you were interviewing for an associate position when Daniel hit on you. If he interviewed you, it means you’re ready for the responsibility.”
“Yes, more than ready.” I finally had a real reason to smile.
“Excellent. I had HR pull together the paperwork. I trust you and your experience. Despite Daniel’s shortcomings, Action Brand Agency has a great reputation and I have no doubt you earned the experience that is required for this position while working for them.”
“Are you sure? I’d love the job, but are you really offering it to me because of my experience, or because of my grandma? Sorry, but I have to ask.” It seemed too good to be true. I wanted to believe her, but after everything that had happen these past six months, I couldn’t help but ask.
“Madison, you know me better than that. You earned this job. If you would have applied on your own, you would have gotten an interview with me. You didn’t need Judy interfering. I would never hire somebody who wasn’t qualified for the job.
Her words made my smile grow even more. “I can't thank you enough. Really.”
“Happy to have you on board. Now, let’s go find my grandson and tell him the great news. I'm sure he’ll be excited to see you.” Althea winked and gave me a mischievous grin. I knew that look well. I may have just given her and my grandma permission to play matchmaker again with Logan and me.
If only she knew the truth.
I slung my purse over my shoulder and followed her out of the office. It had been fifteen years since that last night with Logan, and even after all this time, I didn’t want to see him.
“We have a potential new client meeting scheduled in Vermont this week. I’d like you to attend the meeting with Logan. It’d be a great project for you to jump right into and get your feet wet. Can you be ready to leave on Wednesday?”
I froze. “You want me to go out of town with Logan?”
Althea turned and gave me a confused look. “Is there a problem?”
I shook my head. “I guess not. I just wasn’t expecting to travel right away.”
“It’ll only be for a couple of days. Besides, it will give you and Logan a chance to get reacquainted.” She let out a light chuckle, and I fought back the groan building in my chest.
Little did she know, her matchmaking schemes wouldn’t work on us. Logan and I didn’t work together. Never had and never would.
Besides, he’d already broken my heart once. I couldn’t let him do it again.
