“And you’re in residency,” he points out with a smirk. He’s not wrong. I don’t have time for anything, ever, anymore. “I think Elena’s hoping I’ll find something, well, someone, that I love as much as my job,” Mason continues. His eyes slide back over to me, but not to my face. Normally I’d tell a man off and yell, eyes up here. But I’m shamelessly doing the same thing. “Ever since she and Alden broke up, she’s been on this kick that I need to find that special someone. It’s been an obnoxious two weeks.”

I raise an eyebrow and look over at him. “And she’s decided that someone needs to be me.”

Mason shrugs one shoulder. “You are her best friend. Trust me, nothing would make her happier than to have you as actual family.”

“Are you proposing to me, Mason Godfrey?” I tease. And I’m not sure what’s gotten into me. I don’t tease. Or flirt. I fire sarcasm and snark like they’re my favorite ammunition for an AK-47.

“Juliet Doe, do you want to run off to Chicago and make babies with me?” he asks, but he can’t quite keep a straight face.

I let out a laugh and shake my head. “That got intense quick.”

Mason grins and bumps me with his shoulder just a little. Must be a family quirk. “I don’t think my sister would mind.”

I sigh and turn to look out over the crowd. This conversation has gotten intense, even if it is ostentatiously flirtatious. When the sum total of your close friends is one person, you don’t have too many deep conversations.

This is kind of nice.

“Auntie Elena,” I say on an exhale. “She’d either be the world’s most amazing aunt who spoils everyone completely rotten, or the kids would be so damn scared of her, they’d never dare look at her.”

Mason chuckles. “You’re not wrong. My parents were bad enough before they died. Now Elena is constantly hounding me about popping out some nieces and nephews. Seriously, she’d be thrilled if I knocked you up tonight.”

“Shit,” I huff, looking over at him with a glare. “You might be hot, but seriously, that’s a little much.”

He takes in a deep breath and shakes his head. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to say it like that. It’s just been… a lot.” Instantly, the weight in this conversation gets heavier, more real. “I’ve lived with this expectation on my shoulders for so long, it’s hard not to let it shape my personality.”

“The way you talk, you sound like a prince who needs to produce some heirs to the throne,” I say, my brows furrowing.

He gives this shrug, one that I think says, you’re not far off. “Look, it’s what I want, eventually. Someone to hold on to, a couple of kids. Family. But I’m not even thirty yet. I’m just not ready. But the entire company and my sister are breathing down my neck. It’s kind of terrifying.”

All that staring, all the flirting, and here is something different. Something real.

Mason looks over at me, and there is something different in his gaze. “I’ve never told anyone that before.”

My pulse picks up. My eyes fall to his lips. “I’ve been working my ass off in medical school for the past five years. I’ve worked too many jobs. I’ve got this crushing amount of student loan debt hanging over my head. Our stuff might be different, but I think I get it.”

Mason’s eyes are fully fixed on my lips as well. He nods. “Sometimes all you need is a little fun.”

I nod as well.

“You’re a lot calmer than Elena,” I say with a tiny smile as I look away. “I can see the similarities, your similar mannerisms. But you’re not like her in a lot of ways.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment,” he says, raising his glass. “My sister scares the shit out of most people. Here’s to being approachable.”

I laugh, and watch as Elena looks our way again, and with a pleased smile, she walks across the building toward us.

“Go along with it, okay?” Mason says quietly as he leans into me just slightly.

“’K,” I agree without thinking.

“It seems you two have hit it off,” Elena says with that devious smile of hers.

“I asked Juliet to marry me,” Mason says, casual and cool.

“I said yes,” I continue it.

“We’re going to start trying for a baby tonight,” he says without missing a beat as he takes my hand and pulls me out on the dance floor.

Mason pulls me in close, and it’s kind of hard to breathe as he wraps his hands around me. Over his shoulder, I catch Elena’s gaze. She stares at us with her mouth slightly agape.
