; âI have been in love with Tristan since I met him,â I said quietly.
âWhoa,â Jason said, as his expression changed into one of surprise. âThatâs⦠Whoaâ¦â
I smiled. âDoes that freak you out?â
âI⦠Well⦠No,â he said slowly. âIt doesnât freak me out. Itâs just⦠I mean, when you were younger we suspected you had a crush on himââ
âWhoâs âwe?ââ I demanded.
âMom, Dad, and I,â Jason admitted. âBut as you got older, you seemed lessâ¦aware of Tristan, and we all assumed youâd gotten over him.â
âNo,â I said, shaking my head. âI just got better at hiding it.â
âAhâ¦â
âIn any case, when I went down to the resort, everything was great, and I had a really good time. Tristan and I didnât see much of each other, and that was expected, but upsetting to me at first. I started dating casually, and Tristan seemed to get jealous of that. Then the night of the resort Christmas partyââ
âYou slept with Tristan?â Jason interrupted, his voice going up an octave.
âUh⦠Wellâ¦. yeah.â
âFuck.â
âIt wasnât just sex, okay?â I said. âWe had a relationship⦠We were in a relationship.â
âFor how long?â
âSince Christmas.â
âWhat?â
âYeahâ¦â
âWhy didnât you tell me?â he demanded.
âI didnât tell anybody.â
âIs that your excuse?â
âI wanted to tell you,â I said. âBut⦠Tristan insisted that he should be the one to tell you. But he obviously never did because he didnât really intend for our relationship to be long term.â
âBut you thought it would be?â
âThings were going so well between us,â I said. âTristan was amazingââ
âOf course he was amazing, Molls,â Jason said, sounding frustrated. âThatâs how he is with women. Heâs charming and charismatic and a whole heap of other things besides. Itâs how he lures them in. Did you actually believe he would be different with you?â
âWell, yeah,â I said defensively. âIt was different between us.â
âOh,â Jason said, with obvious disbelief.
âScoff all you want,â I said. âIt was different. I felt it. Iâve seen Tristan with old girlfriends, and I know how he behaves around them. With me, he wasâ¦more like himself.â
âOkay, then what happened?â Jason asked. âThereâs a reason youâre here brooding about something. Something must have gone wrong to make you quit.â
I sighed. âHe became distant with me suddenly,â I said, unable to bring myself to tell Jason the whole truth.
