âMy pizza.â
âYou have pizza? Sounds great.â He walked through the door.
; âUh, leftover pizza, and itâs only two pieces.â
âWeâll order one then. My treat.â
âBrettââ
âFresh pizzaâs way better than microwaved leftovers.â
She couldnât argue there. âYour treat?â
âSure.â He pulled out his wallet and leafed through it. âIâve got a twenty.â
âAnd you want to spend it on pizza?â
âSure, why not? A manâs gotta eat.â
What the heck? Sheâd eat his pizza, help him with his math, and then politely tell him to leave. Deb and Bruce wouldnât be home until well after midnight. Shouldnât be a problem.
âThere.â She pointed to the phone on the end table. âCall for the pizza. Iâll get us something to drink.â
She headed to the kitchen and poured another glass of iced tea. âYou want sugar in your iced tea?â
âNo. Plainâs fine.â
âOkay.â She hastily returned the leftover pizza slices to the fridge.
She walked back into the living room. Brett was sprawled on the couch looking right at home. Such a beautiful masculine specimen. If only he werenât an asshole.
âAll right,â she said, sitting next to him. âWhat seems to be the trouble with your math?â
âOkay, I donât get the whole negative number thing.â
âWhat donât you get about it?â
âHow come when you times two negatives together, you get a positive?â
Kathryn sighed. She didnât get that either. And for her, someone who needed logic in her life, that didnât sit well. But sheâd learned to just accept the rules, apply them, and get the right answer.
âWho cares why thatâs the case? Just memorize the rule, Brett, and then use it. Youâll get the right answer.â
âBut it doesnât make sense. And then when you times a negative and a positive, you get a negative.â
She rolled her eyes. âYou know the rules. Just use them. Thatâs all you need to know.â
âBut I want to understand why.â
Kathryn wanted to understand, too. But she didnât and it frustrated her. Which was a huge reason why she was not majoring in math in college.
âMaybe there is no reason, Brett. Maybe someone just made that up to confuse math students.â
âThereâs got to be a reason.â
âGeezâ¦Okay, do you have any graph paper?â
