Canaan: As much as I’m enjoying this convo I have a situation to take care of

Madelyn: You’re kidding

Canaan: Nope sweetheart. I never kid when it comes to C Junior

Madelyn: OMG STOP. You named… Never mind

Canaan: Lol Gotcha. I do need to shower cuz I smell like shit from work

Madelyn: Enjoy

Canaan: Not helping

Madelyn: That time it wasn’t on purpose, sorry!

I strip and jump in the shower, taking care of business because there’s no fucking way I will be able to spend the rest of the evening hard as a rock with fantasies of Madelyn.

Talking to her is refreshing. She’s funny, and her sarcasm is on point. I need to convince her that it’s a good idea to spend time together because I want to see her alone. Not at the crowded bar or at work or at the lake with our friends and family.

If I can get her to agree to a date, I’ll be happy. She also feels something, so I know it’s not a one-sided decision.

After showering, I hop back in my truck and drive to Wren’s Cafe. Thankfully, it’s not too full when I walk in. After Madelyn’s message about the blog post, I’ve been dodging Joy’s calls. I purposefully waited for the bakery to be closed before coming since it’s next door to the diner.

I’ll eventually have to confront her but not today.

Full of good food, I’m back home and getting ready for bed. I grab my phone and open my messages, staring at the conversation with Madelyn earlier. Instead of writing to her, I call her.

“Hello?” Confusion echoes in her voice.

“Hey.”

“Did you mean to call me?”

“I did,” I chuckle. “Were you sleeping?”

“Not yet. I’m in bed reading a bit.” I hear rustling through the phone.

“The musician?”

“I finished it already,” she yawns softly.

“Are you tired? Sorry, I thought it was early enough to call.”

“It’s fine. I’m just stretching. It is early, but I’m usually up by dawn.”

Shit, that’s right. I forget she helps with chores on the ranch as well.

“I’ll let you go.”

“No,” she rushes out. “I mean, you don’t have to.”

I grin at her reaction.

“If you get tired, let me know.”

“I will.” Her voice is smooth and soft. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing really. I was going to write a message but then decided I rather talk to you.”
